- At home the service connection is unlimited while on wi-fi (i.e. not charged to your monthly wireless data plan)
You need to have a Blackberry data plan if you want to be able to access Blackberry services, even if its only over wi-fi.
Your account has to be provisioned with Blackberry services and in doing so, the Service Provider allows your phone to access RIM's infrastructure for e-mail, browsing etc. (RIM charges the SP a monthly fee for this.) The SP / RIM give you access while you are paying a fee for Blackberry data.
RIM's infrastructure comes into play whether you are accessing it via the cell network or over your wi-fi connection.
Wi-Fi access to BlackBerry data services:
A Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry smartphone can access BlackBerry data services using Wi-Fi
networks in two ways.
1. Access via enterprise Wi-Fi networks
• Allows for optimized Wi-Fi access to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server when
connected to a Wi-Fi network that allows direct IP access to the BlackBerry Router
• Direct IP access usually only occurs when the BlackBerry smartphone is
connected on an enterprise Wi-Fi network.
• Wi-Fi access to the BlackBerry Internet Service and additional services is also
possible with the proper network configuration. See the Quick guide to service
availability section below for more details.
2. Access via hotspot or home Wi-Fi network
• Allows for access to all provisioned BlackBerry data services via the
BlackBerry Infrastructure.
So in summary, setup your wi-fi selection to "automatic" and it will reconnect when the hotspot in the profile is in range.01-12-09 09:20 PMLike 0 - When you connect to a wifi network, it will setup the entire BIS (and BES) communication link via your wifi network. So unless you are running an app that specifically connects via the carrier APN it will go over the wifi connection. Some apps like slingbox can also use a socket connection over wifi. Once again the app needs to be coded to do this.01-12-09 09:34 PMLike 0
