Someone needs to go back to finance class. And you would be surprised how many people are using ducktape to fix the creaking of the battery door on this $600 phone. You are probably upset that you didn't find about this method before you voided your warranty.
There are plenty of reasons why it's a bad idea to use a marker to dye the ball, while it's still in the casing, as opposed to removing it and dying it properly. Either way, it still remains that until you open your phone, and note what kind of mess has been made of the internals of the trackball assembly (and nearby electronics) you don't know that this process made less of a mess than cheese puff power.

I saw on Championart's thread (http://forums.crackberry.com/f83/my-berry-bold-235353/) that if you colour your trackball with black permanent marker you get an instant black trackball.
I was worried about putting ink to my trackball but hated the rotten hillbilly tooth colour it had become.
BLAM! Less than a minute later I have a sexy black trackball!
I used a cotton bud to remove excess ink from the trackball casing.

No putting a marker to your trackball doesn't void the warranty if thats the case then most of these blackberries warranties are voided already from having pen ink, dirt etc get on the ball. It most certainly doesn't do any damage to the phone (well of course if done properly, anything can damage the phone when done incorrectly). I made sure to specify important measures to take. The permanent marker is a quick dry solution that dries in a matter of seconds on contact with the surface. Its no worse than the dirt, grease, grime on your hands getting on your trackball. Also eventually your trackball would have turned black after being discolored from natural wear and tear, this accelerates the process without the brown/yellow stage but does it in a way you that you would like it.
Lol so why not have the best of both worlds. Black when the backlight is off and blue when it comes on

That's an assumption; the people who honour the warranty may see things quite differently. I wouldn't bet on them covering an intentional act. Vinegar is one the oldest natural cleaning substance along with lemon. When cleaning your appliances with any liquid it is recommended that you don't have them plugged in or turned on just like the recommendation that the battery be out of your phone for this little project no matter what you are cleaning it with. Also it was recommended that whenever you want to clean your trackball from that yellowish/brownish color to use vinegar. Alcohol contains 70 to 100% volume of ethanol. Ethanol is a very flammable and volatile liquid. But lets not turn this thread into a bunsen burner science class.
Both methods of cleaning the trackball with both substances have worked well as reported by people who did it with no ill effects, i'd rather go by that than any assumptions. Coloring the trackball has worked excellently with no problems at all. To my knowledge warranty was not turned down on a berry whose trackball was colored. Warranty is turned down when you open up your berry and change your trackball or any other parts and they can prove it by the damage to that little sticker on the screw. And most importantly people are happy with their colored trackballs which was the point of this thread. So lets have a beer agree to disagree and go by the facts and pictures of proof in this thread which are that coloring your trackball with a permanent sharpie works with no problems at all and everyone who has done it thus far is happy with their outcome.
