Do I need a reformat or a software upgrade?

I have been having problems with my keyboard where it has suddenly started to put multiple alpha letters in when I press a key or continually places a full stop behind letters when i haven't hit the "full stop" key. Its driving me mad by starting a new sentence when i don't need it!
I have been told it's a software problem and i need to reformat the device.
How do i go about this or is this the solution?
I have done some searchs to try and find my specific problem but not much luck so far so I'm not being lazy starting ane w topic about this.
Desperately need some help as it's my main business communicator and i love the Bold as a workhorse unit.

It sounds like a software issue. Reloading the OS using another carriers' release could solve it
