It's absolutely NOT the same device.

There are two different versions with different radio capabilities.

Not sure why this is so confusing to people.

Yeah... You probably have a point there. I live in Montgomery AL and so far no drop call issues.. 3G is just lacking around here.

This article sums it up nicely:

Common features of the 9900 and 9930:

    Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz) and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/n (5 GHz)
    GPS
    NFC
    Accelerometer, Digital Compass, Proximity Sensor
BlackBerry Balance (find out more about it here)
5MP camera with 720p video recording
    1.2 GHz single-core processor
    768 MB RAM
    8GB of on-board memory
MicroSD card support (up to 32GB)
    1230 mAh removable battery

The only difference between the Bold 9900 and Bold 9930 is that the first has tri-band HSPA+ and quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity, while the latter supports dual-band CDMA/EV-DO Rev. A, dual-band HSPA+, and quad-band GSM/EDGE networks.

I wouldn't expect someone with over 10k posts to be so ignorant. But yes, different versions of the same device for network purposes. Same software. Same hardware. Same phone, different radios.

    Thanks for clarifying.
