On the bold, there are two metallic looking parts; one on each side in the metallic rim near the very bottom of the unit. They are unidentified in the documentation that came with the unit. Are these charging contacts and would permit me to charge the unit in a cradle or are these just little nubs holding the rim to the chassis?

Nope, charging contacts for the charging pod, just as you guessed. They do not allow for a sync, just charging.

I have 2 charging pods and when I use either one, sometimes it's a little difficult to get the charge connection. Seems like the phone needs to be seated just right. Kind of annoying...
