It'll come with about 1/4 battery. I've heard that charging a device fully before using it is better for the battery life long term...but I have no idea if that's true or not. I used mine right away and charged it that night. My Tour battery life SUCKED but my old Curve had amazing battery life.... I never did anything different...I think it has more to do with the quality of the battery.
All I really know that applies to batteries is NIMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) is a better battery. the charging it fully many only apply to the older NICAD batteries which had horrible issues with memory.
if you ran a NICAD down to 5%, and charged it, the battery would develop a X% memory (X being the random number) it would charge to the 5% only (or use the X% formula if that helps you understand it better) this is why you would have to completely discharge the battery to have it "forget" the memory effect, and keep it properly maintained.
old habits die hard, and sometimes I run my battery down to it's knees, then charge it back up in my blackberry. did this in my curve sometimes, but i'll probably do it to my new bold also.
what can nuke a NIMH (and any battery) is non stop charging of it. Most have charging circuits to cut off the flow, but it still may flow to the battery which will heat it up. It won't explode (unless it's a garbage battery) but it will shorten it's life span. I got my curve 8330 august 2008, and heavily used that sucker. blared music through it's speaker, texted/surfed/talked up a storm, and the battery was finally showing it's age about 2 weeks ago. Not a bad life for it I think.
It will tell you in the instructions about the initial charging. I would charge it fully, then charge it every night. As the poster above stated, you cant overcharge one of these batteries, they like to be charged.
The new batteries are Li-ion and like a full charge. Discharging may shorten battery life. Lots more information here: Welcome to Battery University Just be sure to read the section about Li-ion and not the others.
Most of these new batteries will take a full charge in under an hour so the delay to usage is not so bad. :)
charge it.
and do not charge it everynight (unless you use your phone alot and your battery is drained). try to charge it when its required. granted that its not going to work out perfect but its healthy for the battery.
This is wrong. Li-ion batteries do not like to be discharged. It actually shortens their life. The battery technology of the chargers, will prevent any damage from over charging. Charge often and don't let you battery get to low. Charging over night will not hurt it. Mine is always in its cradle and my batteries have always lasted a long time.
The battery life will get better with time. When I first got it I was very unhappy with the battery life. Now it is great and last a little longer than I need it to

A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.

Seriously? You've got a bad battery or BB.
