    Hi everyone,

I have an unique situation. I was just given the opportunity to purchase an 8900 for around $50 without needing to add the data plan. I will be using my device for voice, text and wi-fi.

So, should I go ahead and get the 8900, or should I wait for the Onyx? The only benefit that I see with the Onyx is 3G, which is irrelevant to me since I will not be using the internet through AT&T.

    Thanks!

I think you answered your own question!

That is a great deal for the 8900. You should go for it.

    A reassurance topic??

    Like the above poster said...

You ask a question and then literally answer it in the same post. Why even ask if you should wait for the Onyx when you know the only difference is really only 3G which you don't even need/want/care for?

Maybe it is just me, but my EDGE reception blows now that ATT moved the EDGE bands to the higher frequencies. I get dropped calls or call failures (IE the call fails to connect due to spotty reception) much more frequently.

Since the 8900 is an EDGE only device, you may find that your reception will get worse, especially since ATT wants to gradually phase out EDGE in favor of more 3G bandwidth.

I don't even use data on my 8820 (I have it disabled), and my cell reception is crap. My brother and dad who have 3G phones have at least 3 bars all the time at home, while I am lucky if I get 2. My mom who has a EDGE/GSM phone has the same reception problems I do.

I get these receptions issues at more places than my house now too. Something to keep in mind.

I think in your situation the 8900 would be best. For most I would probably say wait for the Onxy, but I think 8900 would work for your needs and that price is amazing!

hey for that price, buy the 8900 and get the onyx later if you're so inclined and sell the 8900 for a massive profit

If you don't care about 3G then just get the 8900.

I just got my BB 8900 fri from Sams Club and I love it but the best part is that it was only $39.99. Any Sams club members that own anything less than an 8900 should try to jump on it!

    The Critic,

How/where are you getting this deal? I currently am using an 8310 for voice/text only, and don't want to spend $200 for the 8900 (ATT hiked the price back up).

I think the processor is going to be faster in the Onyx. Also, it "may" have the trackpad. I'm not saying that these are decision points for you but there will be other differences between the 8900 and the Onyx other than just 3G. Time will tell I guess!

Do what I did, buy the 8900 now and get the Onyx when it comes out. I will probably get a Storm 2 as well. You can never have too many Blackberries.

Why, in the name of all things holy, is this a difficult decision? Get the 8900 sir, and fast, before you are told that the sales person was fired for making such a crazy offer....

Yes but then you have to factor in the added price... I bet the ONYX will cost a premium when it releases... Expect at least 299.99 on a 2 year in america.

He's saying he can get a curve for $50 and has no need for 3G... Is it even a question any more? Get the curve 8900, use it to death and then get the Magnum or whatever the next best thing is. The ONYX hardly improves on the curve 8900 anyways so you should be good.

The Onyx is perfect for those upgrading from 8300 series curves, the Pearl, or 8800 series blackberries... But for those with Bolds, Curve 8900's, Tours, it's not a "must-have" upgrade.

Anyone have any idea on when the Onyx is expected to be released. I'm not sure if I should wait for the Onyx or take advantage of the great prices currently available on the Bold. I want WiFi & 3G so switching to Verizon for the Storm and Tour are not options.

Seeing as how they just started production of the trackpad models... I'm guessing it'll be a while before they start manufacture etc...

A rogers rep I spoke with had no clue about any upcoming onyx release for the rest of the year so I'm going out on a limb and saying early 2010... though it could come out in december.

Wal-Mart (Let's Talk) has them listed for Free with the standard 2-year agreement (includes a 4GB mini SD card). If you qualify for an upgrade, you get it for $0.99! Now are those great prices or what!

That's what I figured Madness. Thanks for the help. I guess I'll be getting the bold within a week's time.

Free Wireless Cell Phones with Plans from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless | LetsTalk.com

Right now, they are offering the 8900 for free with any new account or renewal. No data plan is required either. If you google around, you can also find a $25 off coupon to use on some accessories.

I dno, maybe since you wanted to get a phone NOW, the 8900 was/is a great choice for you. But, me personally as an 8900 user since its release, just can't wait to get an Onyx, well "Driftwood" I guess for T-Mobile

I really don't have to get a phone now, but I just want one. Then again, the Onyx is probably a better phone, but for those of us who own a Blackberry without a data plan, its added 3G capability is of little relevance to us.

I figured that the Onyx is going to be priced at $200 (or more) for a while, so purchasing the 8900 for a very low price maybe a good short-term solution.

What don't you like about your 8900? I'm interested in hearing.
