Wehn i try and open an application on the bold, i keep getting an hour glass, i understand this is due to open applications running in the background of hte phone is there any way i can safely close them?

Use menu - exit rather than escape key.

I am aware of that now, but which is the best way to close programs which are open at the moment?

Welcome, hit your alt key and then your escape key to check which apps are running, you should have your default ones running, browser, phone, home, BBM and messages. Anything other than these must be closed

Thanks, that's fixed it, now just to remember to close the apps via the
menu.
