Have figured out how to use the Bold
as a flash light by going into video mode
and setting Video Light to On.

Handy little feature but surpised there is an application to download
on Crackberry that does this already with a Flash Light Icon

Anybody know of an app that does this (other than PeekaWho that uses
message indicator light that is not as bright)?

Great find! It seems to work well although it's a multi-step process to setting it up. I got a warning that keeping the light on will impact battery life. I guess it wouldn't be a good thing to keep on for any length of time.

I don't know any apps that do this, but I have used my BBs as a flashlight a countless number of times.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. I love my flash light app for my iPhone, even though it is not as bright as my Bold.

Yea, I currently do this. But if he wants to make a flashlight app instead more power to him.

    The app is called "Freelight".

    Written by Troy Brown.
The whole main screen turns on bright white as does the message light.

    OTA:
    www.troybrownpc.com/freelight.jad

It was designed for the earlier Berries, but it works just fine with OS 4.6

SpaZmogem, thanks for the link, but using the flash is still brighter than the screen.

Set one of the side convenience keys to VIDEO and then press it and press the space bar and you have a usable flashlight; at least for indoors (bedroom, hotel room, reading menus in dark restaurants, etc). It won't let you work under your car, but it is great as a standy and much brighter than the screen.

freelight I think works so much better than the flash on bold. The white led on the front of the phone is insane.

Oh man! thanks guys! I had a similar app for my Nokia and was kind of missing this with my BB. I'd rather have this app than a silly light-sabre effect everytime an iPhone is moved! Haha. iPhone users.. take that! :-D

I do however wish there was a app that I can downlopad to turn this light on without being in camera mode

Here's a solution: use both! Just not at the same time (because you can't).

I like Freelight as its not too bright. When I'm trying to get my clothes on and ready for work @ 04:30 it won't be so bright as to wake up The Wife. The flash I believe is a tad brighter.

Someone should really write a program for this! I don't know if it's the same type of programming but on one of my old windows mobile phones a guy found the flash light API and just made a simple program to trigger it and bind it to a hardware button or software launcher.

Thanks for the link. Works great on my Bold. I prefer this to using the video light (which I suspect sucks battery a lot faster).

Freelight is indeed quite bright but the light does not "project" very well. It will light up a room though.

If you want to see in the dark in front of you, the flash light does a better job of projecting light in the direction it's pointing as opposed to just lighting up a dark room.

    Someone write this program please!
