With all of the hype about the Bold 9900/9930 being pratically over, and reading the negative reviews particularly on this forum, can the 9780 still be the best BlackBerry to date (for some users?)? Besides the 'better' keyboard, bigger (touch) screen (may be a negative for some users), more memory, and faster processor, some owners of the 9900 complain about the elimination of the left convenience key, seeing no difference in OS7, no AutoFocus on camera, speaker quality, keyboard noise issues, trackpad issues, etc. I'll be honest, I've been anticipating for the release of the 9900, but after reading the reviews, I just might pass or wait until the new batch arrives at a cheaper price in the near future. 9780 owners, what are your thoughts?

Camera is better on the 9780 but screen res is much lower and CPU is too slow.

Keep in mind this is early release software on the 9900/9930. As behind as RIM appeared to be on well, everything, you can bet there are issues with the 9900 series devices that will be improved/fixed in patches to the OS.

The 9780 on the other hand is a very mature device.

I hope not for RIM and RIM fans. If it is they are in deep trouble except with the faithful.

The 9900 is the best device hands down. Questioning that shows some lack of information.

The camera thing is overrated. The device is not as good if you like taking pictures of things (as in other devices) that are close, but that is somethig you can find workaround (also remember, the OS is in it's early days. Next versions might as well correct the oversaturation).

OS7 devices are better than OS6 devices, which were better than anything else before them. No much material for discussion here. just watch the videos.

If you like the size of the 9700/9780, then wait for the 9790 to release... the best of old and new

So true. You need to wait even a couple months for OS updates to be released and developers to create apps to work with OS7. Then you can poll 99XX owners and see their opinion. Too early to tell. Imagine if you asked PB owners on April 22nd what they thought of the PB? That being said, I do like my 9780 and find it to be a relatively stable and firm device. I'm sticking with it for the time being.

Indeed ... my bold 9780 stays too for now quite a while
Its gonna take RIM a good measure of time to get over teething issues with the OS7 devices. And IMHO, the 9780 is a matured, stable product (that's actually a beefed-up device of the very well received 9700).

indeed, i am a fan of Bold. but for me i don't like Bold with touch. i just want the Classic Bold QWERTY devices. also big A+ for RIM if it will be a Classic Bold QWERTY (no-touch) QNX device.

Only problem I see with the 9790 is the screen resolution... Why not bump it a notch instead of keeping it at the beaten down 480x360? :/

Don't like the touch screen? Nobody will force you to use it. It has a trackpad so you might as well ignore that the touchscreen is there.

A waste in my opinion as it makes things work a lot faster. From OS 5 up, the screen has been asking to be touched.

I have been having some problems with my 9780 but overall I like it. The 9900 and other OS 7 devices just don't bring enough to the table to justify paying money, reupping contracts, and wasting an upgrade on. Sadly I think RIM will see a lot of their once faithful moving to iPhone soon (like me).

Excuse the language, but the 99xx phones **** all over the 9780. I would hardly call the 9780 the best phone RIM has to offer. Maybe the best previous generation device, but definitely not the current best.

480x360 resolution is fine on a 2.44" size screen.

Anything more would be a waste... and I haven't heard any 9700/80 owners complain so far.

It certainly is in my opinion. I am getting one this week (9000 currently) as the upgrade price is 0.00 and i do not want to shell out for a 9900 when i think the 9780 is better for me as i prefer the form factor.

It simply isn't even close, the 9900 is already far superior in performance to the 9780 with just the launch software, the touchscreen doesn't intrude when you don't need it and adds a lot to the device when you do use it and this is quite probably the best keyboard ever from Rim.

I loved both the 9700 and the 9780, but there is no way I'd settle for one of them after using a 9900.

It probably wouldn't be a waste, but due to the smaller screensize it definitely isn't an issue like it would be for the 9900 or 9810 to still have 480x360.

RIM's problem hardly comes from their userbase. I'm sure blogs and Wall Street will be bashing the "low end" resolution.

9790 could be a nice hit of "Both worlds".
I really liked the form factor of both 9700>9780, even the leather feeling can't be compared with the new 9900 carbon fiber cover. Not a fan of the second.
On the other end the 9900 has a lot of new features that need to be tested
The best available from RIM now, altough I already know that doesn't have the maturity that 9780 has developed in his course.
Best thing to do is to carry the 9780 in the morning and take out the 9900 during the afternoon.
