If I upgrade from 8830 WE to 9000, will I be losing coverage (eg, unable to receive calls in europe? South america?)

uh no...they both take sim cards, so as long as yours is "unlocked" or you buy and international calling plan...it will work everywhere. "World Edition" = "Marketing Hype"

you will actually have much better coverage with the 9000 because the CDMA carriers like verizon and sprint are new to international roaming and do not have deals with as many carriers as tmobile or at&t would around the world.
I was recently traveling with someone with an 8830 and it was headache after headache for them. My 8800 worked fine as soon as I turned it on on the plane anywhere we landed.
