I agree with CX who f**k'n cares about the name! if the phone is sick and has all the features ur looking for.. you can call it the Blackberry Puke for all I care
when people ask you what phone u have just say the 9700..
I always say i have the 8900 instead of the curve..
I admit that it's an odd name for a phone; it kind of sounds like it would be a Blackberry geared towards a younger audience but as long as it performs well the name should not be a factor at all.

So does this mean the Driftwood also = Merlin.
Or does it get a different name?
Or maybe the Onyx & Driftwood really aren't twin devices...always so many questions
Everyone thinks calling your phone another name for a stone (quartz, whatever) is better than calling it a magical wizard. Especially one that lived during King Arthur's time?!
I'm sensing many people in this thread have no idea who Merlin was.
Merlin is imaginative and opens up many more possibilities for marketing.

I'm sure plenty of people here are familiar with Merlin.
Usually there's some significance when attaching a well known name such as Merlin to a product. Not that it matters but if RIM sticks with this name what about this phone says Merlin?

While I'm not a big fan of the name Merlin for any device, you need to keep in mind that the name doesn't make the device, the device does. I could care less what the name is so long as it does what I need it to.
Everyone I know still calls the 8900 the Javelin, and I figure the Onyx will be the same. No big deal either way.
Exactly i dont care what they name it... people will still buy it no matter what. they can call it "BUTTERCUPS" and we will still get it...
Wow...I didn't think they could come up with a worse name than Tour...I was wrong hahahahaa
No you were right.I could see a marketing campaign with the Merlin. The Tour? *Yawn* Well you can see how much RIM markets it.Especially compared to the Bold or the Storm.Next in line is the Curve. How many different devices are going to use this name?Curve(83xx),Curve II(8900), Curve 1.5(8520)
I know, I know.....the answer: One day my ex, a 'Gemini' was paying the monthly bills which were not to go higher than '8310' and as soon as she reached '9000' the term 'Flip' came to her mind, throwed me a 'Javelin' and kicked me to the 'Curve' where I found an 'Onyx' rock and returned the shot which sent me on a 'Tour' to jail and magically 'Merlin' bailed me out................... sh*%t !!!! I'm obviously a crackberryhead, resistance was futile, I was assimilated.....
I think this wouldn't make sense also. I mean didn't they change Niagra to the Tour in order to give it a Four letter codename. Onyx to Merlin would just not make sense.

Personally, I like the Tour's name. Especially considering the networks and the devices capabilities. But seriously bro, who cares what the name is as long as it does what you want? I dunno, maybe that's just me. But as long as its a quick(talking very fast here) and does all I need it to, they could name it what ever. I'm not buying a device for its name, I buying it for what it can/does do.
