They are almost the same but with a different form factor. You would not get facts, but as you said, people's experience and what they think is best "for them". Some like larger screen, others, a larger keyboard. In terms of performance, they are the same.
9810 - auto focus camera, larger screen, smaller keyboard, slider form factor
9900 - nfc, smaller screen, larger keyboard, bar form factor
So there the exact same speed, same memory? what screen is matter? not as in size but what one has a higher resolution?
Yes, same everything. They are the same resolution, the 9900 has a 640x480 (landscape), the 9810 is 480x640 (portrait) and tilted to the side it becomes 640x480 obviously. Pixel density is higher in the 9900 making images crisper but at the same time smaller, so, older people would like the 9810, since it has a larger screen and is "easier" on their eyes, supposedly, as both devices can have their font size changed anyways, but it will always look larger in the 9810.
The 9900 has EDoF which after reading and understanding the differences between that and auto-focus, I realized that for my needs, the EDoF would be suit me. Here is a good article that talks about the pros and cons.
I'll chip in on the keyboard. I tried the Torch briefly, my mom's 9800 and a 9810 in store. I found that my adult size thumbs don't work as well on the Torch keyboards, which need to be smaller to accommodate the slider design. I got the Bold 9900 which has a slightly larger keyboard with bigger keys, which I find super for typing. If typing is important to you, I suggest favoring the 9900 for the keyboard.
I have the 9900, my wife has the 9810. we both love them both, i went with the Bold because of the form factor, & I read somewhere the Bold has a better/faster modem. I have not tested though.
*On the Telus website the 9900 is listed as 4g, the 9810 is not.

My wife & I both migrated from the 9700. Debby is really thrilled with the larger screen, the option of vertical/horizontal view. She types on the keyboard smoking fast and uses the touch screen for selection etc.

I started doing a hybrid touch/type thing myself with my 9800 and that is one of the reasons I loved the 98xx and did not get the 9780 when I had a chance.
I can't wait for my 9930 to get here on Tuesday. Still wondering if I'll keep it on Sprint or use it on AT&T. I really don't want to lose 3G, so I may actually keep it on Sprint.
