The 9700 is the flagship phone of Rim. The 8520 is a great entry level BB and the 9700 is the top of the line BB. 9700 will be more expensive because it is newer and better. Better screen resolution, camera, battery, 3G, and processor are some of the major advantage of 9700.
Rule of thumb with Bl9700ackberry's is the higher the model number sequence the better the phone.
Minus the Storm...
Anyway, it's all about preference and what you need. Seriously, if you're not going to use your phone's capabilities, why go out and get the "best" one, based off of extras you won't use? The 8520 is a good phone. Plastic, yeah... but in many instances I found it more usable and better/faster than the 8900.
The 9700 is just THE DOOKIE though. If Chuck Norris had a foursome with a Mac, office phone and MP3 player... the mutant kids would be Bold 9700's.
9700 is much better, but I wish the protection the screen has on the 8520 existed on the bold- the screen appears to be almost under a protective layer on the 8520 while on the 9700 its just there...

I agree, I have both and the 9700 is far better in so many different ways.
