well.. very good news. this certainly makes the 9650.. the qwerty BB to own. I know some favor the slight (and i mean very slight) form factor differences of the 9700.. but not at the expense of an extra 256mb of device memory.

Personally I still fully plan to go EVO when it launches and see if I like it (and Android).. but I have to say I feel much better about the Bold 9650 now as a fallback in those 30 days should the EVO/Android fail to fit me.

512mb is a nice boost. I don't use a ton of apps (my pearl refuses to allow me.. lol) but the 9650 will absolutely expand that potential for me should I end up with it.

    Nooooooooooo!!!!

Now us 9700 users will be stuck with "only" 256MB.... While the 9650 will be blazing with 512...

Stoked for the 9650 peeps, but now I'll need to upgrade ... Not to CDMA.... GSM now needs some love... Let's hope the 9800 gets announced @ WES w/ 512 or even 1GB

Great news. Maybe people will stop crying about this phone being the same thing as the 9630, but I doubt it.

There's another thing we can check off the list of unknowns about this phone.

It is almost a given at this point that this phone will be OS 6.0 ready. It will probably run OS 6.0 with the Webkit best out of any phone.

i agree completely. The new Bold is the only Blackberry to have such a larage amount of memory. RIM will focus on the Bold 9650 right now since its the only Blackberry to soon be on the market to get 6.0 running on and webkit

right now it seems that the phone to have is the 9650

I know... But does it mean the 9700 might not NOT be 6.0 ready with "only" 256 MB?

I believe it will be. They demoed the webkit browser on it. If you read the article kevin wrote he talks about how the 9700 processor interacts with the memory different then any of the other blackberries and this is the key for webkit browser support with 256mb I believe is what he says. Also the 9000 was running early versions of os 6.0 (without webkti i believe) so you would have to think the 9700 will be able to even with the webkit browser.

All these questions should be answered next week.

yeah - I saw the 9700 stuff after going through the main article... so there's hope yet... speed of mem access can sometimes be better than more mem, but slow access to it...

in any case... stoked... finally some good news overall for the BB community... the 9650 people are in for a treat!

If 512mb is the minimum necessary to run OS 6 on, why is RIM putting out a phone ( Bold 9650) with only the bare minimum requirement. It will be outdated by the release date smh.

this RIM and BBs we're talking about... not Android where in 3 months your $#!t is obsolete...

a BB has a MUCH longer shelf life... which is a good thing

I don't believe anyone said 512 was min. It is desired to have 512 to have OS6.0 AND the webkit. Other phones could probably run it but probably wouldn't be ideal to have it on them.

At least this is the impression I'm under after reading Kevin's article.

We really shouldn't be trying to figure out what phones will get OS6.0 and the webkit browser until more info is released. All we are doing is spreading rumors based off of very little info about something we haven't even seen running.

ok 512mb device memory and 6.0 ready and webkit. this is what i have been waiting for. not spectacular upgrades but heading in the right direction sloooowly. this will make it harder to switch to android, but im still going to check out what my options are when my contract is up.

Your'e not reading it wrong, you're right that is the desired memory which translates to minimum required or minimum desired memory for operational functionality.

In order for it to run optimal without being sluggish 512 is needed. Sure OS 6 can go on older phones with less mb's but it would be useless as it wouldn't be able to ran without be sluggish. Just like computers where you can put vista on a older computer who's specs don't meet the minimum ones necessary to run vista but the performance would be horrible.

no it could be like you see on windows OS boxes for PCs... "Recommended" & "Minimum" values for RAM...

could be that for 6.0, RIM will have a "Desired/Recommended" mem of 512MB, but a "Minimum" of 256MB*

*256MB of fast memory, as in the 9700....
