With my past phones I have always had to close down all applications running in the back ground as chewed thru the battery.
Is the same required with the Bold and if so how?

Yes you're right. You close an app by pressing "menu" and then "close". Pressing the END key just leaves the apps running in the background.

Also check out some of the apps out there with a search. Some of the apps are major memory and/or battery hogs.

To see what apps are running, press and hold Alt and press the Back key. This will bring up a screen with all current running apps. Just close them out.

If there are 10 apps open will I need to shut each individually?

Keep in mind that on those steps I offered, there will be five apps that can't be completely closed. These would include Browser, Home screen, Call Log, Messages and BBM. Just closse them to make sure they're closed anyways.
