So what is it exactly at the back cover of the phone? Is it really carbon fiber or something else that is similar and looks to that?

It's plastic, that looks like carbon fiber
Carbon Fiber would affect NFC so they had to do a different type of carbon weave i think.
Ditto!

Likely a fiberglass product. It looks great!
The back is redesigned so there should be few complaints about how it looks OR fits. Unless you are a "hater"
It's plastic. Any sort of carbon fiber would interfere with the NFC antenna.
Carbon weave + glass composite

If you take the battery cover off and hold it up to a light you can see through the woven material.
I thought it was Woven Glass or something.
It's same material as automotive interior carbon fiber looking trim (not the real one)
Newb to nfc (unless we're talking football lol). But how would carbon fiber interfere with nfc

Wow You can see through the woven material too. My guess is yes it is carbon fibre.
IT IS NOT CARBON FIBER! As others have stated it would interfere with the NFC antenna if it were Carbon Fiber! RIM has stated it is Woven Glass.
I remembered hearing them talk about it in videos, but here's a written reference to it as well:
From: BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 Smartphones: Business-Ready Inside BlackBerry for Business BlogPremium materials were used in the construction and design, and you’ll find brushed stainless steel and aerospace composite backing for the finish.
You are exactly right. It would interfere with the radios and antennas.
It is "faux" carbon fibre .. plastic made to look like it. I was privy to the "faux" leather of the 9000 back .. wish they would have incorporate that into the design. I felt a better grip with the fake leather of the 9000. Still love the 9900 form factor though.
