I am on .267(7.1) and 3G sucks! Even on -71 dbm signal coverage my discharge rate can reach up to %20 easily. When on idle it is around %10
I would do a wipe on my phone and install a fresh copy of the OS and only restored phonebook, tasks, and memos, etc.
BUT not by restoring all the apps and settings because certain data files might be corrupted.. just my 2 cents worth.

I just thought to try this myself. Normally I leave my 9900 on 3G only, but I am consistently getting about a 10% drain (on all previous builds and currently 7.1.0.284)

However, today I decided to switch it to 2G/3G and my battery life has doubled.

Now I'm on a 5% drain. What an amazing difference... Don't know why I didn't think of this earlier...

These early OS's are UNWORTHY of release.

I remember the same scenario with my 9700, it wasn't until about a month ago, I got an OS leak which gave me 12 hours on one charge; previous to that I was only ever getting about 8hrs. Come on RIM!

When I'm at work I use 3G as it's a good signal and I have no wifi
at home with the wifi on, i use 2g. don't need 3g and wifi on.

Similar experience. Signal strength ranges from -75 dbm to -95 dbm on 3G only option at home. Battery drain steady at 8-10 % / hr.

    c'mon RIM -

I'm not sure why, but my playbook charger increased my battery life from about 8 hours to over 12. I only ever use that now and it might be worth trying out.

What are the pros and cons of having 2g on all the time? Is my call quality reduced? Data speeds slower?
