Hi, a friend of mine just purchased a brand new blackberry 9780, and has just discovered that his Mute button does not work -- at all.
I was just looking at the phone, there is no click sound and no matter how many times I press it or how hard I press(that I dare) it, it won't work.

Any ideas?

The top right button just mutes the handset in a call, or pauses any media playing.

If the phone is brand new and it doesn't work, then take it back.

To switch between the current profile and vibrate, hold Q. I believe you and your friend were expecting the "mute" key to work like that (I know I was. :P)

If there is a shortcut for silent, do let me know.

On previous BlackBerry devices with OS builds pre-OS5 (5.0.0.500), the Mute button used to put the phone into standby mode. This has now been replaced by the top left Lock button.

Perhaps the OP's friend was expecting that to happen?
