- Hi All,
I've read the posts out there that discuss the 9700 vs the 9650, but they seem to get off topic. I wanted to start a new post to see if we could confirm the (known) differences in one thread.
A little background... it looks like my company will be migrating me away from Verizon (which I believe has the best coverage in the U.S.) & my 9550. If time permits, I'm considering dragging my feet to get the 9650 on Sprint, but the 9700 seems very comparable. btw, I'd like to request we keep this discussion to the devices and not the networks, if possible (I realize that AT&T is GSM and allows voice and data, but coverage can be spotty out side of major cities, but that Sprint coverage is not necessarily better...any ways.. )
From what I've read, the 9700 has a better battery life and a faster processor, but the 9650 will support open G/L. Both have 256mb, wifi, gps, global 3G, media, etc. Are there any other differences (e.g., do we know if both will be able to run the webkit browser when released and use flash when it is made available?) Other than gaming, which is not a priority to me, is open G/L going to be a big deal in the next 24 months? Any other known differences or considerations?
Thanks to all who contribute!
(fyi, my BB history is 7250 -> 8703e -> 9530 -> 9550)02-21-10 06:18 PMLike 0 - Tour2: CDMA
9700: HSPA
Similar processor 528 vs 624MHZ
same camera
similar OS
both have trackpad and wifi
1400 mAh vs 1500 mAh battery(but the 9700 eat a lot less energy...)
T2 will allow 3D gaming(like 85XX)
Screen resolution is the same but the T2 will have a little bigger display(same as the T1).
The main difference is the network, cause both are in the Bold ''family''
4 Main BB families: - Pearl 81XX/82XX/9100
-Curve 83XX/85XX/89XX
-Bold 9000/96XX/9700(cause the Tour have more similar spec to the Bold series than the curve)
-Storm 95XX
most time(not always), phones in the same ''family'' will be very similar...Last edited by jgodin03; 02-21-10 at 06:34 PM.

- You are right!
Both support 32gb SD cards.
The Tour2 will probably have a little less ram than the 9700.
I think the 9700 have around 128mb and my T1 have 64mb(54 in reallity but it's always a little low than the ''official'' one.
I post a picture to prove it. Most people dont know the difference between ''internal memory'' (256mb) and RAM(64mb)02-21-10 06:44 PMLike 0 -
- i never knew the 9700 had no onboard memory..... so another advantage of Tour 2 is the 2gb of onboard memory too then02-21-10 07:23 PMLike 0
- The 624 processor is considerably faster in my opinion. The 2gb onboard memory is something i'll never understand unless you always use under 2 or over 32. Why manage 2 separate memory storage spaces that are not flash? Anyway, they are both great phones. I think the tour is in the original 8800 series world phone though. I might be wrong and it makes no difference anyway.02-21-10 07:52 PMLike 0

other then that, if your not running a lot of apps at the same time, there is no speed difference what so ever in speed between the 9630 and the 9700 that I can tell, and I've tried over and over and over again to try to find the difference02-21-10 07:56 PMLike 0 - I've used the 9700 quite a bit now since my wife owns the Bold 9700. I've compared speeds of my Tour against hers countless times. The only difference in speed that the 9700 wins is when both phones are running around 10 apps at the same time. The 9700 holds the advantage of still running pretty strong running a lot of apps at the same time.

- Reason I ask is because my 9700 came with a 2GB card preinstalled, at least evert AT&T 9700 I've sold has had one. So I guess the memory issue is kind of a draw.02-21-10 09:27 PMLike 0
- yes, thats how the Verizon Tours have been too. They were sold with a 2gb card in them, and Tour 2 is rumored to have a 16gb card installed on Verizon Tours a long with 2gb onboard memory which is a plus02-22-10 07:03 AMLike 0
- One thing I noticed was that you were talking about Sprint in the original post.
If the move is to Sprint, they are CDMA, so the 9700 wouldn't work on their network. You would have to go with their CDMA lineup, which currently would be the Curve 8530, the Tour 9630, or the future Tour 9650.

(I'm still going to ask for my 9550 to be accepted by Sprint, but based on other posts, I'm not holding my breath )02-22-10 08:43 AMLike 0 - I think they are close with the 9700 winning out slighly. I have a 9700 and have been playing with the Tour 1 at the Sprint store. The 9700's build quality went down from the 9000 IMO, it def feels cheaper to me (I have both). I think the plastic on the battery door of the Tour makes it feel cheap, if it had the soft rubbery feel to it that would be better IMO.02-22-10 09:12 AMLike 0
