Can anyone comment on tethering speeds with their 9650 on Sprint? I maaaay jump ship if the tethering speeds are up there... (on T-Mo... they are sllllllllllllloooooowwww) - i'm non-contract with T-Mo so can leave whenever...
well, i can't speak for the 9650, but in good coverage i notice really no difference when tethering with my 9630 or my normal internet connenction for general browsing on sprints network and faster than on the goverments network.
Speaking of tether. Do you have to pay twice if you want to use it on 2 laptops? I'd like to use it on our home laptop and my work laptop, but was wondering if I'd have to pay the $49.95 twice to put on each laptop?
Ran a speed test. I'm using "tether" to tether with. Dowloaded at 938kbps and uploaded at 513kbps. There was no change from my 9630.

well that download speed is about 3 times what I can get with my 9700 on T-Mo, and about double the upload speed... since this is my main means of internet at home... I think I have no choice... must get new 9650 and dump T-Mo... I don't blame them per say, just that in this area... AT&T seems to rule the roost with towers, coverage and speeds... T-Mo is left with the scraps...
I'll be finding out first hand in a day or two... broke down and ordered a 9650.... got fed up with 0.3 Mbps tether speeds.... eff you T-Mo....
T-mo is either severely throttling tethering speeds in my area... or some dumb@$$ forgot to flip the HSDPA switch... as I've yet to break teh 300 kbps (0.3 Mbps) threshold... meaning to me it seems like they are stuck at the 384 kbps UMTS base speeds (no HSDPA, let alone HSPA+ like they claim....)
I just broke down and used Tether... tried the trial last night... and then low and behold... it's on sale for today at half off.... Rather than pulling my hair out to figure it out... $25 didn't seem too outrageous...
see the crackberry homepage for the link... I think it's today only...
I'm on it right now. Using Bluetooth and the 9650 my speeds are just ok. Between 510kbps and 650kbps down per a speedtest and around 200-250kbps up.
Not the 750-1000kbps I was hoping for, but serviceable in the event of no WiFi or other connection. Certainly no streaming or downloads, but could do basic e-mail.
I'm in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area.
1X is 1xRTT - basic CDMA2000 protocol - data speeds max at like 256kbps or something like that.
EVDO is EVolution Data Only - and can sustain speeds up to 3.2Mbps if you are in a Rev A area.
GSM is going to be EDGE - roughly comparable to 1xRTT in speed... and Global means the device automatically switches networks when you are traveling. I recommend turning Global to 1X if you want to preserve some battery life and don't travel a lot.

Thank you very much. Now how can I be in or get EVDO with my bold 9650?

Those were on our Mac. I'm now tethering via Bluetooth on my Lenovo work laptop and speeds are higher. 650-750k down/275-350k up. Better. Don't have my USB cable with me, but will try that to see how it improves.
