Theoretically (other than the possible differences in the OS revisions) it should be similar.
The memory isn't really going to make the phone faster unless for some reason you managed to get the 256mb on the 8530 to a really low level and didn't on the Bold.
It's heaver due to heavier parts (the curve is all plastic and very light) larger screen ,larger battery, flash, etc etc...
The 9650 is faster, hardware wise and noticeably faster network speeds. The 9650 uses 3G Rev.A which is faster than the 8530's Rev. 0.
The 8530 is lighter-weight because is made out of a more plastic material and has a low-resolution screen. The Bold 9650 has a high resolution screen.
dont forget about having a gsm radio in it to make it a world phone will make it alot heavier too.
