Sorry but T-Mobile's 9700 is terrible as a 3G device.IMO because of UMA. All sorts of data speed and network hand-off issues with T-Mobile's version. From the beginning T-Mobile had problems getting UMA and AWS to work on one device.UMA works just fine on the 8900 and other EDGE BBs. It's AT&T's 9700 which is the best. If you need AWS wait for the 8980. I'd say in the short run it would be AT&T's 9700 followed by the 9650 and then switch places when OS 6 and OpenGL become meaningful factors.

I have perfect 3G reception in my area and no hand off issues that you speak of. While building signal penetration isn't as good as the 850 MHz from at&t, overall signal quality and lack of dropped calls on T-Mo - in my area - are FAR better than at&t. I get a consistent -70 dB signal while on T-Mo 3G.

UMA works flawlessly for me - no issues with wifi to 3G handoffs and vice versa. So again, I fail to see the issues you describe. Perhaps they were early on and/or on earlier OS versions, but I've yet to see this with my recent 9700 handset (11 Mar 2010 build date) running .593

As far as I'm concerned, who cares which one is better. They are both good devices on different carriers. They both have there pros and cons.

As far as open gl goes, not interested. I will wait until all devices have it and then we will see what a difference it makes with apps. Don't really care about 3D games on phones. I have my PS3 for gaming (Battlefield Bad Company 2).

Like somebody mentioned earlier, memory will not affect speed unless you only have 10mb left. Plus the apps suck on Blackberry's. I have a 9700 and I don't ever regret getting it. I love this thing. I have over 100 mb and I have never had a problem till this day. You have to be kidding me if you download more than 100mb of apps on a Blackberry. Like they mentioned on the podcast, poynt and quickpull are about the most downloaded. Not a good sign

I really hope RIM pulls it together withen the next two years. Until then I will be a loyal BB fan.

Wow, that drop-down comparison list was pretty darn amazing. Put a lot in perspective.

As for the 9700's superior battery life, I noticed on the list that it noted GSM or UMTS before each stat which kinda feeds into my belief that the certain providers are more battery-friendly. I read it somewhere once and it made sense. Does anyone have any input on that?

Also, I wouldn't go as far as to say one phone is better than the other. GSM has their top dog and CDMA has there's. I'm just glad Sprint is finally getting a high-end Blackberry.

as people keep throwing around the "but it has open GL" argument... keep in mind Open GL only has usefulness for 3D rendering... so for OS related performance, as well as most standard apps, it means ZERO.... it's application is for games and 3D CAD and design software... i don't personally use my BB for games... tetris would be the extent... and the latter - doesn't even need mention.... and open GL has nothing to do with video either... i'd rather see some video acceleration codec on a BB than Open GL.... it would be more useful...

as far as I see it , open GL is quite moot as a selling point for me personally... if i want to play games with fast graphics, i won't be using a BB that's for sure... these are the types of things that kill battery life... all the fancy eye candy.... maybe offer it on some BB's like the Storms, but frankly, keep it off the business/workhorse oriented BBs

correct, keyboards are the same size. the only thing that makes the Bold 9650 a little bigger is the bigger Bezel thats on the phone which makes the Bold 3mm wider

The only advantage the 9700 has over the 9650 that isn't opinionateded and pure fact is batterly life but it is only marginally better than the 9650, by one hour of talk time or about 16%. Sure the 9700 is a little lighter and smaller and it uses the latest bb style with the rubberized side keys and all but thats opinionated differences.

and don't forget stand-by.... 9650 is a mere 13days (312hrs)... while the 9700 is 17days (408hrs) on 3G(UMTS) and 21days (504hrs) on Edge (GSM)...

and music playback... 18hrs vs 38hrs (9650 vs 9700)... WHY such a gap is a mystery... but it *could* be an indicator than the 9700 does in fact have a faster/more powerful processor, being able to process the mp3's more efficiently than the 9650...

The bottom line is, apart from folks that just have to nitpick and love to argue, based in the specs (yes, there are differences) but in daily use:

Battery life? Difference unnoticeable in most practical use
Memory? MOST people won't use 256, much less 512. Not an issue.
Size & Weight? Nearly identical.
Network support? Depends on YOUR network, not really a choice item for most folks.

So for PRACTICAL PURPOSES:

you guys do realize this bicker over batter life of 13 days and 17 days etc etc is pretty pointless rite? no normal person literaly goes 13 days w/out charging thier phone so all this talk about which battery last longer is pretty ********. i'd say 99% of the ppl i know literally charge thier phone everynite when thy go to sleep.. soo yeah the batter argument is dead

Isn't it kind of well known that on average GSM smartphones (GSM phones, period) get better battery life then CDMA? I thought it had to do with the technology and how the phones keep in contact with the tower?
