So three weeks ago I wouldn't have cared one way or another if it was available. Now is a different story. I am almost always carrying two phones as I do device testing as most of you know. Right now I am carrying the HTC Inspire and my tried and true BB 9700. Added to the mix recently is my Playbook. I have used tethering to my 9700 and it works ok in a pinch but is not the fastest method. This last week I was in an undisclosed location (no I wasn't hunting with D!ck Chaney) and the wifi did not work where I was. I used tethering a little bit and was not pleased with the speeds so I decided to try out the app that was preloaded on my HTC for the hotspot and I was VERY PLEASED! This allowed me to surf with my playbook and my wife to surf on her laptop and it worked very well...
So in short I now consider this feature a basic necessity of ANY 3G/4G phone....

Have we actually seen anywhere that it WILL include Wifi hotspot?
There were definitely some features of v6.1 that showcased wifi hotspot capability.
I'm sure it's included and the initial spec leak clearly showed it. I can't imagine that the latest smartphone does not include this capability. The reason why RIM decided not to show it does not mean that the capability is not there. As this is decided by carriers, I am sure some carriers asked RIM not to highlight the WiFi hotspot until carrier themselves can announce whether they will activate it or not.
I agree with you in theory. :) RIM *should* keep in the hotspot access on the device, but in retrospect I can see them not putting it in, especially at the carrier's request (coughAT&Tcough). However, seeing that T-Mobile is getting this, and them calling it their 1st 4G BB, I can see it being on there....
Only time will tell.
When IP4 came out, it did not have a WiFi hotspot capability, but in a subsequent software upgrade, Apple "activated" it and now I have it and it's so handy.
So, I am sure the 9900 has it, activated or not.
This is a pretty big deal. Most devices are coming to the table with this feature lately. Not one person at BB World asked about this? Kevin? A little help here?

im really not sure why RIM would leave this off AND the front facing camera. I guess maybe these phones have really been a long time on the development path and when they started making them 2 years ago these features werent popular lol
If the 9900 does not have it, it is indeed a deal breaker for me. My 9780 will become just a brief flirting. As soon as I know that the hot spot is left out in the 9900, I will switch back to IP4 as my main. I hope it does, as it was shown in the spec until fairly recently. It may have to be activated by carriers but I really cannot see that it's not there for a BB flagship.
so
someone explain it to me plz
there are wi-fi hotspots and mobile hotspots right?
wi-fi hotspots are those.... which sometimes are available in restaurants, cafs/coffee shops, hospitals, hotels etc..
they let you use their wlan, sometimes free, but mostly you have to pay
and mobile hotspots are those that let you access mobile internet even tho you dont have a mobile receiver section (useful for an ipod touch for example)
(useless for the bold 9900/9930) but in addition its also useful for phones if you're overseas (using an extra sim card from a provider of that host country) cuz it keeps you from getting high roaming-fees
is that correct?
or what are you all talking about?? can someone please explain it to me please?
We are talking about whether or not the 99xx handset can be a mobile hotspot - allowing you to use it as a gateway to the internet for your other devices such as a laptop, tablet, etc.
I just got my Verizon 9930 a few mins ago.
I still can't tell if this phone can create a mobile hot spot or not? The VZW rep I spoke to on the phone can't tell me the answer either.
When I bought the phone online, it gave me the option to select mobile hot spot as part of my data package?
Can anyone clarify at this point?
