Just wiped shrunk and updates os to 7.1.xx
re-installed whatsapp and it barfed up "sorry this device no longer supported, upgrade your device"
error.. so much for the july 2017 time frame..

ps: install from app store or whatsapp website same thing

Yeah that's what happened to me at the end of October, I popped the Sim back into the 9900 and my Whatsapp wouldn't work. I didn't get it to last until December 31st like they said it would.

But I wonder if for those who did not delete and reinstall it, is it still working?

Just for kicks, I just installed WhatsApp on my 9900 via the beta url above. It installed 2.16.85 and then let me know that 2.16.88 was available. I upgraded to that version and then tested a chat between my 9900 & my Priv. The app works fine on both devices. Take care.

Yeah I had version .88 already installed on my Bold. It was working fine until I pulled the SIM to use on another Bold I had just got.
When I returned it back Whatsapp wasn't working. I got the download for version .85 from another thread posted by Shuswap . ( many thanks!! )
I also got the notification to update but refused to do so since this works fine for me !

You're using a 6 year old smartphone with 11 year old software. What do you expect? The 9900 is a great device for sure, but expecting app support is irrational.

I just did a sim swap between my Priv & my 9900. As soon as I started the WhatsApp app, it noticed I changed sim cards & prompted me to swap accounts. Took only a couple of seconds. Then for kicks, I downloaded 2.16.89 from BlackBerry App Store. Everything is still working fine.

You might want to try visiting the same page in the Wayback Machine and see if the download is still there, for Tumblr I tried to do that and it did work (the file was there) - except the application didn't work. Its worth a try, otherwise you can search for a Java version meant for another phone, I'm pretty sure I have a file but haven't tested it yet because I'm afraid to overwrite the native version and sacrifice the functionality I have atm. I am sorry, I got this phone recently and while I didn't expect the world at all, it is disappointing that products which function are being discontinued "just because."
