    Hi All,
Just a quick question- I'm about to open the box and i was wondering am I able to upgrade to the new OS .590 straight out of the box? So do I turn on the device and plug it straight into the computer ready for the upgrade? Or do I need to do the basic 'set-up' (where should I stop) before connecting it up to my computer. Instructions on what to do once I get my device out of the box would be helpful- because the very first thing is I want to update the OS.
    Cheers in advance!

Yep, thanks infinus- I knew all that. It's just that I (you recommend) don't (shouldn't) turn on the phone until I plug it into my computer?? By connecting it via USB- the phone will boot differently? Like instead of showing the set-up, it will go straight to 'usb connected' and I can't 'use'/touch the device (until new OS loaded)?
    2. Also it is correct that the newest release of an OS has all the updates of the previous OS's built-in?
    3. I'm after the longest battery life- which OS does everyone recommend (without sacrificing any new features)? Someone told me any OS newer than .353 should improve battery life- but which one would be best/have people found best so far?

Upload new OS before all else. I am running 7.1 with hot spot. Not sure which is the best. Just wanted to help answer you question about when to upload.

Oops, hit enter too soon. If u a already a bb user. Keep using current BB. Find the OS YOU want to run after people give their input on which OS to run OR u do further research. Finally go to dm And hit device switch. It will run u through the steps. You don't want to be with out your phone and communication as you update ur os and configure

Ok, so turn on phone once plugged into computer (and OS update is ready to go)? Anyone done this before? After the updating is done- will the screens/process guide you through the same process had I just got the phone out of the box and begun to 'set-up' the phone (without updating OS first)?
    Cheers

Personally I would unpack the phone, start it up and set it up prior to installing a new OS. Please post your results especially if you decide to update straight out of the box!

ok, i'm gonna do it tomorrow or the day after- any more advice?
Urbanguy- doesn't that mean all the 'set-up', personal settings etc. would have to be backed-up and then restored after loading on the new OS? i figured if I hadn't set-up the phone yet- it would be easier (no back-up or device wipe) would need to be performed?
    thanks

I think it will be far better to update straight out of the box as then u didn't setup anything on the phone which will be erased with an update at a later stage. However, you might want to first check your phone for any faults such as trackpad etc before doing so. I would do it straight away though. Good luck

    Congrats on your new bb
    You shouldnt have a problem.
Remember to drain your battery and than give it a full charge for over 10 hours, that seems to help a lot.
Oh and I recommend you upgrade without loading the any of your data.
    Enjoy!

No you don't want to drain your battery then he might end up with a you know what device. You don't want to scare the newbie. He would have a 50/50 chance after that.

+1 for 540 too. tried all others, including the leaked 7.1. good radio and battery life, no glitches. batt lasts me for 14-16 hours with :
    - 3g and wifi on all time
    - location on
    - 100 or so bbm messages
    - 15-20 sms
    - 1h-1:30 voice calls
    - 30-45 min browsing
    - 3-4 times update bb news with 15 sources and read almost all articles
    - facebook - 5-10 messages but manual update
    - 2 email accounts
    - sometimes i take pictures, but not daily.

    i'm pretty happy with it.

In a nutshell what is most noticable (or new) in .585 vs .590?

Not sure what the changes are between .585 and .590 but both have the 100% to 92% battery meter bug.

What I do know is that you can not combine .590 with the earlier radio files from .540 or .503 which you can with .585 and that by doing so you cure the battery meter bug.

Not seen any reports of bricking with the .585 Hybrid and have used it myself for some weeks with no problems.

It is easy to create, see page 2 of the Official .585 thread in this forum for a how to do guide from Phill_UK.

Personally I am sticking with the Hybrid until a really good new 7.1 build comes out. I can't see another 7.0 build coming out now.

When apploader launches, it will wipe the device before installing the new OS.

I'm going to do it in around 16 hours- decided to go for .540 (straight out of box- no initial set-up) - anyone can change my mind? I've got .590 downloaded just in case also...
