I moved to an area that is 100% Verizon for approximately 70 miles in all directions. I noticed that my Sprint 9930 will only connect 3G less than 10% of the time. My co-workers that have Sprint phones running Android are roaming in 3G just fine.
Over the past weekend, I was in a remote area that had a Sprint tower 1/4 from the cabin. My buddy's Sprint HTC Epic showed full signal with 3G. A test showed that it was indeed working at 3G speeds. My phone absolutely refused to connect at 3G. I did a reboot, nope -- only 1G with full signal.
In my hometown near the big city, it works fine in 3G. Is there some sort of glitch with Blackberries? I'm about to dump this in the river... Oh and yes - it has the latest software revision.
