I'm currently using the library's computer as my current laptop died. I'm thinking of getting a BlackBerry Bold from Verizon next month. The library's computers are pretty restictive about downloads and my relatives won't let me use theirs. Do I absolutely need a laptop for set up?

No, you don't. If you're currently using a BlackBerry, download BlackBerry Protect, run a backup, and you can do a device switch online after you sign in and set up the new device.

You would need to re-download any 3rd party apps, though.

In BestBuy Mobile Canada, we transfer contacts, apps and documents from the current BB to a new one for free when you do the upgrade with BestBuy. I think same policy goes for many retailers and carriers. You should ask about this before you buy, so that you know which retail outlet will do the transfers of apps and data for free. BestBuy Mobile Canada also change the PINs for all of your apps that registered based on your PIN (ex. Mobihand). You just have to long in to the app store using BestBuy computer and we do the rest for you.

But again, I don't know how BestBuy US operates. I also work there part time so... I don't know if the policies on transferring data has changed or not.

Also BergerKing is right. You can use BlackBerry Protect to do some backup and restore, but some items like apps won't get backed up under BB Protect.

    All the best.

It is not as easy or as quick but all RIM phones have the utility to set up your email. You really need a computer for back ups and upgrades. DeskTop manager is the minumum for most.

For apps, can't you just change the pin/model # in the crackberry store and have the apps change over?
