NFC is a great idea, but will it work if the battery dies? If you want to pay for something, or in the future, open and start your car???

Through a passive system, then yes, the device that is reading will initiate the info xfer even when your phone is off, or sleeping. I am not sure if it will work with the battery completely dead.
