According to my bb, there aren't any updates available to my current setup. Does this sound about right?

Interesting. I wonder why my bb won't find the newest one? Is there any advantages In the newest os?

Your BlackBerry will check for software updates from your carrier, the thread that's sticked are the newest from any carrier.
You just delete the vendor files and load it up, instructions are somewhere on here.

If you want to see what's new, usually on the thread, there are comments about what has improved/changed.

It will only find the latest official OS approved by YOUR carrier.
Advantages are bug fixes, some minor, some major.

    Search, read, and learn

Be aware that "latest" doesn't necessarily equate to "greatest". Two different things.

True. But in my experience with blackberry, the latest tends to be the greatest.

I understand that, but my phone isn't seeing any updates, which as we all know is bs because there *are* updates over my current version.

7.1 will definetely be better than 5xx series as soon as .sfi will be updated from what has been leaked for .74.
Java swaps with 150 or 163 cods from other devices won't make it run as a full 9900's dedicated OS unfortunatelly. That is why I've gone for official 5xx.
