Anyone know if you can still set up message box shortcuts with the alt button like on old blackberries?

If you enable Launch by Typing:Application Shortcuts - Menu/Options its the equivalent of "dial from homescreen"Off. M-messages, from there you can type, alt-S for Sms, alt-M for Mms, V-saved, U-Unread, alt-I for incoming and alt-O for outgoing, alt-p for phone calls. There are more using the alt combo and letters and more using just letters. Hope this is what you wanted.
