you most likely cant use it as 3G. T-Mobile 9900 supports 3G bands 1 and 4 which are 2100MHz and 1700MHz. The carrier in south america is probably using bands 1 and 2 which are 2100MHz and 1900MHz. Thats why it will never work as 3G.

An Unlocked 9900 from T-Mobile will never work on AT&T 3G network.

If you get a rogers 9900 from canada you will be able to get 3G service.

T-Mobile 9900 supports 3G and HSPA+ (labeled as 4G), but they use "non standard" GSM and UMTS frequencies. Looks like your telco supported frequencies are not compatible with the supported by T-Mobile 9900 ones.

To be sure check your telco frequencies and compare them to the supported by T9900 ones:
    GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS1700, UMTS2100, CSD, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+,

It will only work on 2G on your carrier.

You mean update the OS ?? If that is what you meant, it will make no difference. It is all based on the built in technology in the device.

Changing the device OS will not change this. You will not get 3G on that device on an incompatible network.

The phones ALL have the hardware to get BOTH the normal 3G bands (1,2,5,6 att rogers telus bell etc) and tmobiles (1,4,8) 3G bands as well. However it is a firmware issue I believe that brands the phones to a certain carrier's 3G bands. It is not the OS. If its not firmware its some other lower level software setting we do not have access to

Apparently there used to be some RIM software floating around that could open up all the bands but I'm not sure what has happened to it or if it even works on our newer devices.

I have a Bell 9900 with bands 1,2,5,6 and would *really* like to be able to open up tmobiles 1,4,8 bands so I can swap a tmo pay as you go sim card in for traveling thru the USA

I don't know this is possible at the moment though... If anyone has access to such software PM me and yes I already know about the eScreens etc

updating the OS will make no difference. It requires some low level eeprom flashing for those bands to be available. Only RIM has access to this.

Not that we know of... Nor is it something that should be widely advertised on the internet if such software did exist

Then YOU need to compare the freq. bands and make sure they work.

So basically if the carrier networks include GSM 900, 1800 there are no other problems.
