    Hi Guys!

I have just attended the Blackberry launch party in Singapore organised by the RIMM and one of the Telco in singapore.

I managed to speak to the product manager who presented the event and I was told verbally and again that it was indeed "Gorilla" glass that is on the Bold 9900.

All the RIMM representative were using their Bold 9900 without any screen Protector at all!

This is so exciting for me that I want to just share it on this forum!

    IT IS GORILLA GLASS!!

    Cheers !!

Ah that's good news! Not that I'd use a screen protector! I like the feel of the screen without one lol

Sorry, but even RIM says no Gorilla glass unless they made a special run for Singapore.

There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer...

Kevin, or somebody from the CrackBerry team: Could you PLEASE get a hold of one of your contacts and get the official word on what the screen is made of?
Should have been part of the 9900 review.

    *edit
I re-read Kevin's 9900 review. "RIM tells us the display is made of "extra hardened glass," so there's no plastic here."

    So I guess it's official.

The Bold 99xx's screen is scratch proof glass, the same material used on the Storm 9530, 9550, and Torch 9800/9810 IMO. There's nothing to worry about as far as scratching from everyday pocketable objects.

Just don't drop it because it will shatter. I had a 9530 for a year and a 9550 for nearly 2 years, always had them caseless and never got a scratch on the screens.

I'm keeping my 9930 caseless and am expecting the same. It's been 2 weeks and the whole device looks brand new. Not a SINGLE even light scratch. Besides some specific design flaws, RIM usually does a great job making a sturdy device IMO. This new Bold may be the best yet IMO. I'll admit I had to exchange my Storms a few times but that was due mostly to poor execution on the clicking screens.

I see none of that with this new Bold.

Who is "RIMM"? Are you confusing their stock symbol with the corporate name?

Gorilla Glass is not magic and will scratch and shatter just the same. Corning does not have the ONLY hardened and scratch resistant glass on the market. The glass that RIMM (yes RIMM!) is using likely has the same or possibly better characteristics as Gorilla Glass.

The screen is multi-touch. No pinch-to-zoom without it.

It also says "No" for multi touch screen... which is obviously wrong.

True. So think we can rule out the site as reliable.

That said, the GG wiki page lists all devices using the technology and there are no BB smartphones listed. That and the fact RIM had said it uses "hardened glass" pretty much closes this argument.

    Or so I'd hope.

I want to take the screen protector off so bad! I've been rocking screen protectors for years and I would hate for my favorite phone ever to be the victim of trial and error, but the screen feels so much better naked. I would love a solid article that gave me the confidence to keep my 9930 in its beautiful B-day suit.
