I bought the 9900 as soon as it was released, and I've tried hard to like it. Yes, it has a great keyboard but there are more minuses than plusses. Having used a BlackBerry for years, I can't accept having a battery that just isn't up to the job. It's crazy that I need to turn off 3G, GPS, bluetooth, etc just to ensure that I can get through the day. I don't expect to have to limit my activity on facebook and twitter. Never before have I had to use a battery app to monitor my usage and remaining charge. The lack of apps generally is also an issue. Kindle and LinkedIn apps are part of my every day routine. Reading between the lines in many of the 9900 threads on here it would appear that lots of people feel the same, but can't bear to actually admit it. So, the 9900 is being sold and I'm back with my trusted 9780 until RIM release a new BlackBerry that does everything it's become renowned for in the past.

Wow, is the battery on the 9900 really that bad?

I just recently upgraded from the 9700 to 9780 (small upgrade I know), but would love to check out the 9900 if not just for its sexiness. But I remember ditching the 9700 for the 9000 at one point, and being held back by the battery. Had to turn screen brightness down to nothing, EDGE, no GPS/Blueooth and it was pretty horrible because you use the phone that much more cautiously and that is a serious drag.

Trying out my 9780, I went 2 days with heavy usage on my part (basically doing anything and everything without a worry to bary drain). Also great to display websites without the browser close them out due to lack of RAM.

Really hoping software upgrades get the 9900's battery life back to a good place.

That's a shame about the battery. Blackberry was known for great battery life. I suppose that's the price we pay for faster processors, better browsers, always on feeds etc.

The 9700 is an amazing phone. Loved the form factor. But with the 9930 you don't have memory issues. 9930 is almost perfect.

I'm getting comparable to 9700 battery life but I don't use social media or do a ton of browsing. If I did I would just grab another battery. Unless you're working remotely, who isn't around a pc, wall outlet or car charger at some point during the day? For remote work, carry a battery. To go back now to my 9780 feels like a regressive step. I don't think I could do it when so many other fixes are available.

It is a bit worse than the 9700, but it's not horrible as people say

I bought the extra battery & charger combo kit on crackberry store and carry around the spare charged battery in my pocket if I know its a day when I will be extra heavy on usage and have no charging source available. The batteries are tiny thin and light, so I barely notice I even have it.

Crazy is leaving all your radios on and expecting the battery to last, on any phone.

I don't expect to have to limit my activity on facebook and twitter. Never before have I had to use a battery app to monitor my usage and remaining charge.
Maybe you wouldn't need a battery app if you did your social feed updates manually or less frequently. The phone also has power monitoring capabilities for each app so that might be a clue right there.

The lack of apps generally is also an issue. Kindle and LinkedIn apps are part of my every day routine. Reading between the lines in many of the 9900 threads on here it would appear that lots of people feel the same, but can't bear to actually admit it.
You expect a new model to have access to every app available on your 9780? If they were so important why did you not look into what was compatible and what was not, when you bought your phone?

So, the 9900 is being sold and I'm back with my trusted 9780 until RIM release a new BlackBerry that does everything it's become renowned for in the past.
And now to show everyone how serious you are, you will be ditching the 9900 before the apps your missing are available.

Switching off radios that are not in use is "Mobile Phone101"

Minimizing social feed updates is "Mobile Phone 101"

Waiting for updated apps on a new device is "Mobile Phone 101"

Have you wiped your phone, installed the latest OS, restored your personal information and re-installed your apps? That's "Blackberry 101".

Simply put the 9900 gives me half the 9780 battery life. So i get it that you switch back. My 9900 consumes 5% per hour at best over 3G and 1.5% over 2G+WIFI running OS version 440 (353 was more like 3%/h over 2G+WIFI). But I'm not always on WIFI coverage. So I got the spare battery and charger bundle. It gave me back my peace of mind. I don't want to go back to care about battery life and plugging it all day.
My phone is mostly waiting for email so basically what kills my battery most is the 3G radio waiting for emails.

So you have two solutions switching to 2G or having a spare battery. Maybe later we'll have an extended battery..
What I'd love would be a setting to switch to 2G only when the screen goes off and back on 3G when launching a specific set of application or actions. Because I don't think 3G is necessary when waiting for email..
Let's hope RIM upgrade this form factor with the next Qualcomm S4 and that the S4 deliver on power management. And I'd love a smart design that would let us have an optional battery with an adequate battery door that would no kill the design and grip like I had with the Samsung i600.
Or maybe RIM will find a way to save battery on 3G with the current hardware.

If he wants to update every minute and the has the setting let him. If this is the wrong way then the settings wouldn't be there. Then if he mostly social network let him. What's wrong with that?

Then you can wait forever.. I've waited for LinkedIn on the 9780 which (to this day) was never made compatible! RIM need to improve this with their developer tools. iOS does not have this kind of issues well not to this extend. The AppWorld is pretty poor number wise so let's keep the apps available on as many phone as possible. Plus if this is a screen issue RIM could have implemented a compatibility mode to kind of emulate previous Bold screen.

RIM needs to do most of what it's doing now differently, but they seem to wonderfully ignore real world with its minor things like "competition" and "market shares".

Market share is not the holly grail. I think a really great product for a specific use is better than a general purpose that doesn't fit anyone. Right now BlackBerry is the best to match an Exchange Server to someone who file email in a lot of different folders or manage a lot of contacts. Filters using the keyboard is the key to me.
But you are right let's ease the developers with not adapting the software to each device manually. And keep the strengths not no loose them like the battery life..

I have a Sprint Bold 9930 and coming from a Curve 8330 to the 9930...man, it's night and day. While the battery is a little weaker than my old Curve 8330, it isn't too bad. My major complaint is the lack of apps that I had on my Curve 8330 that wouldn't transfer over to OS7 (50% of my apps didn't transfer over) Overall I love the Bold 9930, never had any expectations of it being more than it is. It will suite me fine for my two year contract w/Sprint...then in 2013 we'll have 2nd Gen QNX/BBX devices and an iphone 6 and 4th Gen HTC Evo to choose from.

LinkedIn is gay! It surprises me how make it sound like it is a vital app for your BlackBerry to work! Heh....you have FB, Twitter, WLM, BBM, what more do you need? some stupid spam site for jobs that never did any good other than give you the fake feeling that one day, that magical CEO will see your profile and invite you for your dream job? Get Real! If you still insist on using LinkedIn, do it on your computer and keep RIM away from this bull****z app
You have obviously never used linkedIn. I use it to network and it is a great site for a business owners like me. Also the group availability is awesome...you can get educated just like here on crackberry. That site is really good if used properly.

By the way, my 9930 battery life is phenomenal!

    True but this is wrong.
Only in your mind. If you can't grasp the fact that "conservative" settings "conserve" power than you may wanna trade your smart phone for an easy to use Flip Phone.

If he wants to update every minute and the has the setting let him. If this is the wrong way then the settings wouldn't be there. Then if he mostly social network let him. What's wrong with that?
We should all have our programs set to update as often as they can simply because the settings are available and have all the radios turned on and still have a days worth of power? That is the dumbest thing I have ever seen anyone write on Crackberry. Once again, you are writing pure nonsense for the sake of argument. Everyone knows a smartphone is full of settings that affect power usage and updating social apps every few minutes "REQUIRES" concessions in other areas like TURNING YOUR BLUETOOTH & WiFi OFF WHEN YOUR NOT USING THEM!!!!!

Then you can wait forever.. I've waited for LinkedIn on the 9780 which (to this day) was never made compatible! If Linkedin is so important then why buy a Phone that doesn't support it in the first place? So you can moan about how AppWorld sucks???

No phone will last all day with all the radios on and all the apps set to update as often as possible. Even having all those apps set to update often and nothing but wireless switched on will kill a battery in less than a day.

Seriously dude, for your own good, just don't post if your not going to think before writing.

As for linkedin, odds on stuff like that are about as good as your odds of winning a million on "The Big Slot Machine" at a casino. It's "Who You Know" and "How Aggressive You Are Getting To Know Them". Most large companies have software that thins out the resume's that come pouring in every day. Phone calls, Personal Appearances, and More Phones Calls is what's gets people hired.

however, i do agree with steve17360's assessment of the battery life. although i easily get through the day with my battery, my 9780 did have more juice.

steve17630, i'm not sure if your carrier, MTS Russia, will do this for you, but my carrier, Rogers, has recently been sending their customers a new BB 99xx series battery if they call into and complain about it draining too fast (several threads have been posted on CB). maybe that's worth a shot?

it is MUCH faster than 9780 browsing.
