So when you hit reply to an email are you able to edit the text below in the original message? I seem to be only able to select text to copy. It won't let me enter text in the message.

Is this normal?

Yes... normal.

You need a third party app to do that. I have Email++ and works great.

I use Fixmo Tools. I've been using it since the beta version. It has 18 different apps in one suite. I use the Reply/Forward with Edit almost daily. It also has an email Undelete capability, and recover deleted SMS's, amongst others. You can keep/delete apps from within, if you're memery challenged. It's $7.99 in App World, but I believe its well worth the cost.

Dumbest thing RIM has ever done, almost. Why don't they let the user freely edit the e-mail on a forward or reply? There's no valid reason I can think of for that...

+1 for E-Mail++. An excellent app allowing lots more functions including forward or reply with edit.

I've heard it explained a a Business/Corp security/integrity issue. You cannot misstate someone's intentions if you cannot edit their original email and can only attach it in whole. I also use fixmo to accomplish editing.
