So I just went on eBay and purchased a used 9900 (AT&T) for about $75. I'm not sure what good it would do for me since it's not upgradable to OS10 and can't be used with Blackberry Blend. I suppose I can keep it as a backup.

My reasons for this insanity? (lol)

My replacement iPhone 5s has auto rebooted 5 times and this is the second replacement unit I got from the Apple store. I need the iPhone for the many apps I use daily that are not available to Blackberry devices. Another reason is that I miss the keyboard and tool belt. The new Classic is too pricey.

Anyway, do people still actively use these older 9900/9930 devices from 2012, which run on single core with 768mb of ram? What do you do with it besides calls and texting/emailing?

Yes!! There are probably more of those legacy devises in circulation than the newer Blackberry 10 units

Oddly enough, some people, especially those who prefer straight communication over entertainment, still use them religiously.

Does anyone use the Mobile Hotspot feature on it? If so, can you at least get 4Mbps on the download (for AT&T)?

Also, does it work with Blackberry Blend? It's a great feature and if it doesn't work with Blend, that's very disappointing.

I can't say that I have had any experience with the Mobile Hotspot feature. However, I can say that no 9900/9930 works with BB Blend.

9900/9930 does NOT work with blend. If you have a BlackBerry Playbook it can do basically the same thing.

I just got mine today from ebay and am really happy with it so far. it's harder surfing certain sites and some apps don't exist but overall it's fast and powerful considering it is a 3 year old phone.

They probably could if they wanted, but the strategic direction should be to get more people on BB10. I like my 9900 for certain things, but there's no denying that BB10 is the future and an awesome OS.

Yes I do. My company does. We were eagerly hoping the Classic could replace our "antique" 9900s but the two Classics my office tested just aren't suitable for our use because of the fixed battery configuration. Weak as the 9900's oem battery is, the ability to restore the device to 100% charge with a simple battery swap is invaluable for 24/7 professionals. Those two Classics and a few Z30s NEVER leave the office. 9900's are our device of choice when heading home... or to a jobsite. Of course the 3600ma aftermarket batteries we use in our 9900s outlast the Classic's fixed battery by DAYS.

We would really like to use Blend and other BB10 features but BBRY still hasn't fitted BB10 into hardware suitable for our needs. For now, we get by with DropBox. Still hoping for the day when BBRY's "new" (QNX) development team actually takes a 9900 home and USE the thing for at least a day or so... Here's to hoping...

As far as use, browsing is useful but BB10 browsing wins, hands down. Among many tasks, our 9900's get used for editing spreadsheets. NO other device, including Classic, works better for this role. Especially single handed use. Of course, how many ppl edit spreadsheets on their phone? For messaging, 9900 is still my preferred device. It's famous keyboard has yet to be matched. Classic comes close but for LONG messages, like this post, i'll grab my 9930 while my Passport, Classic, Q10, Z30 and PlayBook sit on my desk charging.

We use 9930's Mobile Hotspot routinely but it's no faster than it's connection. Our 9930's are limited to 3G Verizon. Great in a pinch, like on a jobsite where laptops can't otherwise access wifi. It hits the battery pretty hard, tho.

I use mine with my Playbook as my primary computer. I am interested in the Classic, but it hasn't come to Sprint. I replaced a laptop that was too bulky to carry around and that I had to pay $80 a month to have internet for.

I admit it might be difficult to get a 9930 now, but I have backups of all the apps that aren't available anymore so I can keep using them.

Yep, I switched back to my 9900 after 3 months on my Passport/OS10. OS10 can't compare to OS7 as a communication tool. OS10 is trying to be iOS/Android and misses as a replacement of OS7.

I have the one I'm using now on Sprint. I get the straight network connection speeds not through NOC that is slowed down. So you should be able to get the same as any other phone running straight on HSPA+.

Pretty harsh comment but somewhat of it is true....But I believe what lacks on BB10 will soon be fixed with an update.

I have a 9900 that I have had since released by ATT Nov 2011. I love it ! Can swap Batteries, unlike the i thing and new BB's. Was thinking of getting a Z30 for a bigger screen ,but I'm gonna stick with this. Had to replace the keyboard is the only repair I've done. Get a new battery once a year, good to go. Great phone !

I still have a 9930 and it is the most reliable BB I've ever used. During Hurricane Sandy I had a charged extra battery. While my friends were desperately trying to find someplace to recharge their iPhones, I swapped in the extra battery. I was able to get online with my laptop using the BB Mobile Hotspot. I had decent coverage from Verizon for the 4 days we were affected by Sandy.

Google isn't bad; Facebook (other than cat videos) is usable, Google Maps works great; the Weather Channel is good. I like the camera.

The internet is mostly maddeningly slow. I have an iTouch 5 and I use the BB Mobile Hotspot when I want to get on the internet. I have used the Mobile Hotspot in hotels, at clients and when cable internet is out. It isn't fast but if you aren't streaming videos, it is fine to get email and search the internet.

I upgraded to a Classic when AT&T released them. I would still be using the Bold 9900 but I was having problems with text messages coming through and voice mail wasn't showing up. I had the Passport and Classic before going back to a 9900. There are a lot of things that are better performance wise in BB10 but Bold 9900 is still awesome for a communication device.

This sums it up perfectly! I've been through countless phones on every platform. NOTHING breezes through communication (Call, text, email) like the 9930.
