This "RIM 2010 Roadmap" was just posted on the Business Insider blog today:

So the Dakota is not a touchscreen version of the 9000, or even a touchscreen version of the 9700 -- which will be the 9900 Onyx Delta (I thought that was just going to be just a 9700 with more memory) -- but rather a touchscreen Curve without a trackpad?

Note the sources -- CB, BGR, cellularguru, and the researcher from Royal Bank of Canada.

That could just as easily be a mistake or an interpretation by the author. To top it off the picture is of the Magnum not the Dakota.

Wow, the new 9700 looks pretty awesome but so does the slider in my opinion.

Disappointing? Why? Originally, there was going to be the Magnum, which was supposed to be a touchscreen version of the 9000. Then that was shelved and we started hearing about the Dakota, which rumors alternately had it as a touchscreen version of either the 9000 or the 9700 (the smart money being on the 9700 since it seems RIM has completely abandoned the 9000 form factor).

So here is a touchscreen version of the 9700, but it's being called the Onyx Delta, and not the Dakota.

If the specs are to be believed (and there is no reason not to believe them), it's to the 9700 what the 9700 was to the 9000, and has a touchscreen to boot.

For me, you already stated the answer:
since it seems RIM has completely abandoned the 9000 form factor.
I was really really really hoping another 9000 form factor device would be released.

The onxy delta is nice, but the dakota curve isnt. Kinda disappointing that ive been waiting around for all this time for a curve...

Who knows if the Onyx Delta rumors are even true though. All we've seen is this one blog post about it.

Well, it's in RIM's UAProf, so we know it exists. I think the only real question about it is whether it is just a 9700 with twice the memory, a 5MP camera, and OS 6, or whether it is all of that with a touchscreen to boot.

All RIM touchscreen devices so far have been full-sized/full-screen. Whether they really would release a touchscreen device that has a screen half the size of a normal touchscreen is probably still an open question until there is some verification.

Ok, personally, the Onyx Delta looks SICK.
Who's willing to bet that it won't be on sprint?
Hopefully my 8330m holds out, I'm waiting for the onyx delta.

Since RIM has 3747493928274749449 different phones anyway, what would it hurt to sneak in a 9000 sized phone? We've already got the embarrasing clam shell flip. Why not a 'Large Marge' phone? Sneak it in. nobody will make fun. Besides, it will shut us all up and we will save this website some bandwidth! I still can't believe they dropped the ball again in going big.

If nothing else- upgrade the original 9000. Since it has been claimed(by some) to be sooooooo d*mn big, give it a larger memory to go with it, a track pad, 6.0+, webkit, revised BB maps with a talking navigator, plus other features also mentioned. IMO, a BA phone should have more- not less. So, if RIM can design a smaller phone that has more......ok, I'll stop.

This roadmap is starting to look accurate given the news yesterday from the most reliable source so far that the 9800 is dropping on August 15, and one of those pre-order appearances of The Phone Originally Conceived of As The Magnum And Formerly Known As the Dakota But Now Called The Onyx Delta.

But the Dakota/Magnum was to be Touchscreen and full keyboard and the 9780 shows no sign of touchscreen. Also, I didn't see where that site says anything about the 9780 formerly being the Dakota/Magnum.

If its true. The Dakota being a curve. it prolly wont actually be a curve. it ill be a bold. or something. or maybe a continuation of the torch line...didnt someone say that torch may become a new line (a la Bold, Storm, and Curve?)

who cares? its pretty clear that if the dakota is a curve, whatever we thought the dakota was is now the onyx delta thing above it.

    3rd name change. GREAT.

p.s. i jokingly made a post asking to let me test the dakota on the blackberry beta forums (didnt know it was against the rules) they deleted the post and sent me a warning email.

    that def means it exists
