In Blackberry Desktop Manager I see a small list with 7.1 OS's and behind 342 I see 'recommended'. I know this means that the OS version is approved by my carrier, but does it also have something to do with the quality of that OS for my phone? I.E. good signal strength, etc.

    Thanks

It just means that version is approved by your carrier... nothing more

Then why did my carrier approve this version and not 391 for example? I mean what is the difference for them?

The only difference is likely to be the time taken to evaluate an OS. Our household phones just about never run the 'carrier approved' OS but rather use the latest and best of the available ones, leak or official from any carrier. Never had an OS issue outside the ones reported here in the forums.
