Keep you 9900 in direct sunlight and you will see that violet light.
Or use flash light directed to trackpad and see that light

I don't believe the 9900 has a light beneath the trackpad, at least I've never seen it on mine.
My 9790 however definitely has one. Every time I reboot it, there is a clear red light glowing. That's the only time I ever see it, and I have no idea what it's for.

The light is not beneath the trackpad, its in the bottom-left side of the trackpad itself.
Its a violet/red/pinkish light which is a sensor, it doesn't show any light when the screen is locked so the sensor does not let anything(command) go to the trackpad.
Basically I'm simple language, when the phone is unlocked you use the trackpad, until the screen blacks out the light will be there and very faint. As soon as the screen dies the trackpad light does too. (:
I made a post about this on my blogg (see signature)

    That's what I meant... beneath/under/inside the trackpad.
I'm still not seeing it on my 9900 anyway, but it's clear as day on my 9790 when rebooting.

I did read your blog post, and I definitely can't see anything on my 9900 in any light condition.

Although in my pic the light on the 9790 looks violet, it is in fact bright red and in the top centre of the trackpad. Maybe this has something to do with different trackpads being used in different manufacturing plants. My 9900 is a Hungary2 device with a very dark/opaque trackpad, whereas my 9790 is a Canada1 device with a very transparent trackpad. I'm sure there is a light on my 9900... but I just can't see it.

I checked and doubled check and my Bold 9930 does not have this feature. I feel slighted . Thanks for the pictures Phill (with two L's)
