So, what's the consensus around best OS, mostly in regards to battery life?

Is it .503, .540? or the latest .585 (which is getting not so good battery life reports)?

I am on .540 and it did improve battery over .260 that I had, but never tried .503 to know if it was better/worse?

    Thanks

I found .540 and .503 to be similar. You should give the 7.1 leak a try. I've found it to be at least on par with these 2 as far as performance and battery, plus you get the functions of mobile hotspot and wifi calling as a bonus.

I went from Telus' stock 261 to 474 for a couple days to 540.
My battery life has been rather dismal.

I was debating a downgrade to try 503, when 585 emerged. I'm going to give 585 a go first, before winding back to 503.

I have not tried a process of elimination with my 3rd party apps yet. I'm guessing one/some of them might be the culprit.

585 is the first release that I've had acceptable battery life from - coming from Telus's stock 261, and trying every release, official and leaked, even a couple hybrids, 585 is the first I've been able to use my phone without having to charge by 2 in the afternoon...

Same here.... I am very pleased with OS 7.1 leak. I never tried other leaked OS version, but the 7.1 is much snappier and has a faster browser than the Telus stock version.

There are few minor issues with the leaked OS 7.1 which may be there in .5xx OS version as well. The errors I found was that, you need to change the default font type to a different one to make the menus work. My notification bar disappear sometimes and I have to do reboot to get it back. The notification bar based apps such as battery apps seems to appear on the list area as well.

You can read more on the leaked OS 7.1 at: http://forums.crackberry.com/leaked-...otspot-673031/

    @AlexBC,
When you read these replies to your thread, you will notice that each and every one of us has a different experience with exact same OS. BBs are like that for some reason and I think the best way for you check which one is the best is to install one and check it for yourself. It is hard to say which is better than the other because all of us will have different experience.

No need to reboot, just start typing on your keyboard as if you were doing a universal search. Back out of it, and your notification bar should be back

.540 works well for me, and I was equally happy with .503. I will wait for later versions of 7.1 to appear before switching.

Personally I am very happy with the 7.1 leak and have had no problems with it at all.

In fact in the 60 odd pages in the Leaked OS thead there are very few problems reported.

Battery life falls somewhere inbetween .503 and .540.

Can't wait for the next version to appear, but don't be put off giving the leak a try.

I feel the same, none of the other OS's gave me the battery life and stability that .540 gives. I also have not noticed any bugs in .540. They may exist, but not in the functions I use.

The amount of time you will waste mucking about with .540 and all the bugs and slow, intermittent data speeds is far greater than it would ever take you to simply update your firmware to 7.1. Official has nothing to do with it. It just means your carrier was slower to bring it to you. The gap in improvements between all the .5XX OS's was evident but small none the less. The gap between .540 and 7.1 is like the Grand Canyon in comparison.

It's funny, I was running .540 on my 9900 for the past few weeks on Rogers 3G. I needed to switch to TELUS this week, didn't change anything on my phone, just the SIM, but since putting in my TELUS SIM card the battery has sucked. The network plays the biggest part in it all. Odd though, as they are the exact same technology (not using Rogers 2G) and the towers are literally the exact same distance away from me.

Switch SIM's and you switch service books. Its good to install the latest possible OS after you shrink it and get rid of all the stuff you don't want. Activating the carrier tracking software is also causes a big loss of performance. For me its "MyATT".

.585 is great for me. Don't need 7.1 or hotspot and I like to stick to official releases, just a preference. When 7.1 is ready and official I'm all about it but .585 is great for me on performance and battery life. Do some battery pulls after installing the OS. I don't do them back to back but maybe one an hour to max 4 a day after installing to get it to settle.

Your carrier released .585 for the 9900?

    Doesn't matter.

In the end you will have an official OS, whatever that is, and I will have a phone that works better than yours.
