It happened randomly; one day the ear speaker was working fine and the next it's becoming so distorted that I have to turn the loud speaker on to hear anyone's voice. I haven't tried a factory reset yet, I'd really rather not have to but if that's definitely a fix then it's cool. I didn't change any weird settings or drop it or anything like that.

Any ideas?

You probably blew your ear speaker. This happened to me a few months ago. I took my 9900 to the electronics repair place where I bought it and for $30 they put a new speaker on it. I've seen the part on Amazon for sale, pretty cheap.

If you feel comfortable with taking it apart, you'll find the earpiece for less than 5$. If not, as Ralph suggested, go to a specialised shop.
