Sounds like an issue with the light sensor. Your device has an ambient light sensor that helps it determine how to adjust the backlight to the differing lighting conditions you encounter throughout the day. THE first thing to try is a battery pull, BUT you may need more advanced help, you may need to contact your carrier and they are probably going to want you to wipe the device. In prep, you should make sure to make a full backup.
