I unlocked 4 9900s (mine and for friends) using a site called freethis berry and I got the unlock code instantly.

They have a nice discount for crackberry users

Appreciate the feedback .. To unlock you need to hold down alt first and then type mepe or meps in the sim card menu .. That will prompt you for the unlock code.

How do you know if the phone is indeed unlocked?
Would sim card be enabled or disabled?

Im hitting alt+mepe and its not doing anything...

On the SIM settings page, type mepd. If Network is set to Active, it's locked. If it is set to Inactive, it is unlocked.

If it is locked and you have your unlock code, type alt+mepe and the field that will accept your unlock code will appear.

Unlocked mine day one. But I have this stupid "activation required" status at the top of the screen which is terribly annoying, in which I need to get another SPC code for. Ugh.
