I'm considering 9900 as a second phone. I found some good deals but not sure how to tell a Chinese refurb from original. Any tips on what to look at?

And maybe good online retailers in Europe (links).

Hardware: lift up the chin under the keyboard (it's glued in place), there are two screws underneath. The left screw should have a white tamper sticker on its head. If it is broken or not there, the phone has been opened up.
Even if the tamper sticker is there and if you have a magnifying glass, examine the right screw to see for any irregular scratch mark or damage. A fresh screw would hardly show any scratch.

Software: press the key combo: alt shft h to bring up the help menu. Look for the vendor number and with that google for the corresponding carrier. If it is from a big carrier, the phone would normally starts up with the carrier logo or sequences. If those do not much, the software might have been re-run, but would not affect operation anyway.

Some here would be able to tell the carrier from IMEI number.
