All I can run is in 3G.
I cannot select to run in 2G.
Perhaps because I am not on a GSM network?

cdma devices don't generally give you that kind of option
Yeah, if you're not in a 3G area it will automatically back you down to 1X.
I am always in a 3G area.
Is it a carrier thing or a hardware thing?

It's a "your device is branded" thing. There hasn't been a way to debrand the device since the 9000.
I see. Thank you.

I have Vz also and can select GSM/UMTS, 1XEV or Global. Its under Network and Connections/Mobile Network/Network Technology. Hope that helps.

This does nothing for decreasing data speed.
You could use wifi if you are trying to conserve data.

I'm on a unlimited data plan.
I was thinking while I'm at work I could go to 2G and save so juice since I don't browse at work.
When I get off I have a 1.5 hour drive home and I listen to pandora the entire way, it really sucks the juice. So, I would like to have more battery when I get off.
When I am at work I do email, text and bbm a lot.
When I pull in my drive way Wifi Manager turns on my wifi and that helps to get me through the night since I browse a lot.
If I didn't use pandora, this battery would work out just fine. :)

I would suggest getting a car charger.
2G, aka EDGE, is a GSM technology. There is no such thing as 2G on CDMA.
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Your 9930 is a world phone, so it is capable of getting EDGE on GSM networks. The only way you would get EDGE in the US is if you unlocked it and used AT&T or T-Mobile as your carrier instead of VZW. In fact, any VZW or Sprint world phone that is used on AT&T or T-Mobile will only get EDGE, not 3G, on those GSM networks.
3G on GSM networks will only work if you are overseas.
Excellent info, thank you.
I have a car charger , but isn't that bad for the battery, since it has a faster charge rate then the wall charger?
I think I have used it 3 times since Sept which is when I picked this phone up.

What car charger do you have?
Most likely, the battery will die sooner if it gets depleted too often rather than if it charged with a car charger. We could provide more information if we know the model of car charger you have.
So, are you saying that there could be a car charger that could charge the battery at the same rate as a wall charger?
That would be great.

Car charger is Just Wireless 2_002687.

No. I'm actually saying there should not be any harm done if you use an official BlackBerry car charger. Ones made by other companies also might be good if the specs are the same.
A generic car charger from eBay might not be a good idea, just like the cheap knock-off batteries from eBay aren't good.
The other charger I have is the oem verizon charger. Model MICRDUALVPC DC 100613(A)

That should be fine. It looks like it is compatible with just about all devices on their website.
Did you say something about your wifi turning on at home? Does that mean you leave gps on all day? That would certainly help, unless its just using cell signals for location. For chargers, I have used all sorts of unbranded cables and have never had an issue charging any BB.

No, I have bluetooth, gps and wifi of all day. Wifi Manager uses your tower location to turn on the wifi. It has been working very well.

That is not correct.
2G vs 3G refer to the evolution of cell technology (as defined by theoretical download speed), has nothing to do with the type of cellular network used by a carrier (eg GSM/UMTS vs CDMA).
Verizon has a CDMA network for its 2G (aka 1x) and 3G (aka EV-DO, later upgraded to EV-DO rev a). Its 4G network is LTE based on GSM/UMTS technology.
FYI: I wasn't happy with my battery discharge rate. Through trial and error discovered deleting WiFi Manager brought by idle discharge from 3-4% down to 0.5-1%.
Just thought I'd share.
2G CDMA actually was IS-95, an obsolete technology.
