Which OS should I install? I'm not really concerned with having the wifi hot spot capability but I do want the most stable and "fixed" os of the two? I was concerned because the current 7.1 build seems like an early build.

go with the latest official release for your device (.540 for 9900, .374 for 9930). 7.1 with wifi hotspot is not even official yet, this is a leak which most definitely has a lot of instabilities and is still being fine-tuned. your call.

I upgraded because I wanted to make sure I had UMA for the holidays that way if I get a call while I'm visiting others, it wont be long distance. I think Hotspots will come in handy too.

There are other small changes and fixes. So far I have been glad I upgraded. Its up to you though. When installing a leak the worst case is its buggy and you end up going through the whole update process again shortly after testing it. So far with this one I'm not worried I'll have to do that. Very happy

OS 7.1 has great battery life for me and the NFC, Hotspot and UMA depend on your service provider (aka carrier). With my service provider, I get all of them with OS 7.1 and I am very happy with it. You can go for OS 7.1 OR wait for the next OS 7.1 leak because it may be better since RIM said they will have OS fixes for those nuke and brick issues. It is up to you and for me, this leaked OS 7.1 has been a great OS.

Keep in mind that leaks sometimes become official. I was running the 540 leak before it became the "official" (it was like 2 days).

I think I am gonna give 7.1 a go. Might as well. Worst thing that can happen is that I have to downgrade. I've had good luck with leaked os's in the past. I was mainly concerned that 7.1 may not even be half baked but it seems most people are having good luck with it.

I personally have liked 7.1. It operates just as well as .540 did on my phone. Mobile hotspot is just a bonus for me, as will be UMA calling whenever Rogers decides to enable it.

I've had 0 issues with 7.1. I don't even think I've noticed any glitches whatsoever. My battery life appears to be better and its awesome having hotspot when I need it!

Downgrading BBM wasn't a huge issue for me, 6.1 didn't bring a whole lot of new features anyway.

Go for the latest official 7.0. I cant see you a reason to try 7.1 unless you wanna screw your phone in a week. My friend had to give his 9900 to the service in irder to get it fixed. Andnlike everybody else he was happy th first day Besides .74 is a very early build, the official we are gonna get is at least .2xx, .3xx and even that will be buggy.
I say you stay away from 7.1

Care to explain what happened to your friend's Bold? There are many reasons for a phone needing to be "fixed"...

the 7.1 leak is actually pretty old compared to the ones in testing right now and it has some bugs. I would say stick with 7.0 unless you absolutely need hotspot or uma calling

Seems like good advice bearing in mind how "buggy" the early verison of 7.0 turned out to be.

Isn't it also true that you won't get app upgrade notifications in 7.1, because App World won't recognize existing apps as compatible with 7.1 until some version of it is official?

There is on problem wiht 7.1 ... especially if you use asian characters you might want to change your font. But in 7.1 its does reset my font to the default BBAlpha Sans and font size 8, whenever i do a hard-reset.
Also i noticed in some apps it does use BBAlpha Sans font even after i changed it... one example is the toast from bebuzz.

    Beside that its working fine.

I'm on 7.0.540 and don't know if upgrading will lead to worse battery life and my device getting bricked.... Does the battery change between 7.0.540 to 7.1?

i went from stock os to 7.1. 7.1 seems for me anyways to have a better battery life. however, if u dont need mobile hotspot not sure why ud want 7.1 yet. and hr or two of extra battery life is not a deal breaker for me (i carry a charger with me)

So off the charger, my phone has only dropped 19% over 7 hours. This is a huge improvement for me. I was on the stock OS before 7.1 and would be down about 40-50% by now.

I haven't been using the hotspot (don't need it at work), I've been using it exactly how I would from day to day.

If BatteryWatch kept data from before OS updates, I would guarantee a big difference in the charts.
