I found a theme I really, really like created by someone else...and while I sincerely love their work, the only thing annonying me is the font on the theme. Nothing "wrong" with it per se, just not my cup of tea.
Is there anyway to change the font without the originator completely re-creating it?

No there isn't. Unfortunately, the themer would have to change the font back to default for you. Ask them to see if they can do a default font version. Maybe offer a donation of a few dollars just for their time.
