hey phonegeek, how did you become a field tester?? Ive been wanting to pursue that career since i stepped into the telecommunications field and wanted to kno how do i reach that position?!
Thanks!
Thanks very much for your comments and information phonegeek! This IS my next Blackberry!
this phone has me so excited that I just can't contain it. I had a curve for about 2 years then I read about the Bold and fell in love with it and I've been using my bold since nov 3,2008. I love everything about my bold and I've had very few problems with the original one I bought (I'm using a refurb one now). This new berry has ready to add to my collection of blackberries. I can't wait for this one to come out!

That isn't for me to decide. I am just providing information and details as I see them. Everyone has to decide for themselves if they should upgrade. Me personally based on speed alone I would upgrade to this device. but then again understand I don't have to pay for them, if my contract was up and I wanted a new device? yes without a doubt.
I don't specifically know if it is coming in Europe first. CX is usually a better resource for things of that nature as he generally has his finger on the pulse of multiple carriers. My assertions are simply based on historical info.
So at at&t if you're part of the network team then you can usually ask an RF engineer about who manages the testing for new devices. For every market it may be handled a little different but for us they are always looking for field testers. Keep in mind though it's not nearly as glamorous as you might think. For every cool device you get you are generally asked to test 10 devices that make watching paint dry look like fun. I still test a lot general phones, go phones, things like that, but since I have been testing this for a while I usually get the luxury of asking for specific devices.
Ok so don't bash me too hard on this. I know these pictures are garbage. I will try to get some better ones up as soon as I can but wanted to give you a rough idea of size and the like....

what happened with the RED lettering numbers ? all i see is white ones on the Onyx
i think the red/white keypad matches better and looks 3x better
thanks for the info!
hope your having fun with the new toy!
You won't see red/white keypad on at&t blackberries.... It's a Verizon thing. ;)
Post some pics!!
Top of page 4.
Thanks for the breakdown PG, i really need to get rid of my Bold and get an Onyx...
...My questions to you is, does it have threaded SMS?
thanks phonegeek! I can't wait for this on Rogers now!
I guess I'm going back to at&t after all.
Amazing!! I'm liking the looks of
this!!! Thanks for the pix PG! :D

A lot of the youtube problem with blackberries is youtube itself. The way youtube encodes the videos for blckberries is crap. I have tons of videos on my phone and they look almost like the speed racer demo the phone comes with

sounds like a gsm version of the tour with wifi and a trackpad, like the 9650 rumored to come out to sprint/verizon. Right?
phonegeek you just made my day with those pics.
my bold has served me well for 8 months so far. I think its time for me to add the 2nd blackberry to my collection of blackberries. My bold is set to be retired. selling it will be a viable option.
im guessing the next blackberry will have touchscreen, qwerty, and optical trackpad. lol.
No the 9700 will not launch in North America first.

ummm tmobile has red numbers white letters.
what is the screen resolution?how large a micro sd card can be supported?
Yes but the at&t version of the Bold came with all white letters and numbers
I only have an 8GB and it works great with that. I may pick up a larger one in the next week or so.
Great info PG! Do you have any way of checking if the phone is capable of UMA? I do believe ATT doesn't support the service, but I am with Rogers which does support it.
Ok all I got some much better pictures of this...

PG
The version I have doesn't have this feature
(first post!)
Is anyone else bummed about the faux leather backing? That's the only thing that bugs me about the Onyx now (and the Bold too). But I guess eventually there will be replacement back covers available? I'd love something more like the metal cover on the storm. Or the carbon fiber look that was on some of the prototypes.
Also, do we know what the processor is yet, specifically?
I've been getting sick and tired of my iPhone 3G, and the Onyx might be my next phone. Debating between that or one of the upcoming Android phones. The Xperia 3 is looking pretty sweet, but who knows when that's coming out...
Will the first 9700 launch with a QWERTY keyboard???
OH wait!! it says BOLD on the BACK!!!
The Onyx is really the Bold 2??????
this means it is the bold replacement. all the theories have been answered. and im all in for this device.
how much longer before this arrives on att? november?
very nice review cant wait to get this bad boy...:)
IMO this is a good thing. The device doesn't slide on the dash. The metal cover on the 8900 scratches easy or at least mine did...
I expect it to launch like the photos.
LOL... Yeah it does but as my friend CX says it's not a Bold replacement. :)
How exciting. I was going to get the 8900. But now I will wait for this to be released. Thanks for the information.
Bold 1 reached field testing in July 08 and released Nov 08. My guess is Christmas 09 or Feb 10 at the latest. Could be sooner. I certainly hope so. What I am going to do with all my Bold gear???
I take back what I said earlier. The leather back is REAL NICE. I prefer the 9700's look over my tour.

Wow the size of the device looks absolutely perfect... Great pics! Thanks for these!
Has the GPS and WiFi been tested? How does it compare to the Bold? Are email in full HTML?
thats a bummer. so this is not the bold replacement. can you provide some insight into what will dethrone the bold?
