How can you have the phone require your password right away after you put it in lock (holing a key or the top lock button)?

That's just a keyboard lock, you cannot password lock from that button until your device times out. Personally this is an important feature to me, so I have password lock set as one of my convenience keys, using it instead of the top keyboard lock button, best you can do. Wish RIM would give us the option so I didn't have to waste one of my convenience keys on it.

Yes. On newer OS versions, the top left corner button only does a keyboard lock, but not a password lock, the same with holding down the 'a' key. However, you can set your left convenience key to password lock your device, as I personally have done to save time

You can also set your device to automatically password lock your device upon holstering, which is great if you only holster your device when going out or leaving the house/office/ect. Hope something there helped

QuickLaunch has a "Lock Device" feature if you're a user of that app...

The side convenience key can be used to lock the device if you want, saves from waiting for it to time out.

if you have "dial from homescreen" disabled and "password lock" enabled you can press the "k" key to automatically password lock your device.

There is also the standard Alt + Enter, which will password lock your device.

Running OS 5.0.0.979 I have to tap "k" from my main screen to get my phone to lock. Using the lock button on the top left only locks the keypad. Hope that helps.

There is a option in the menu, Password lock, just set it as closest shortcut on ur homescreen.
If you are on OS 6.0 Set application shortcuts instead of universal search and tap the key K.
