SO I am switching to BB today (yes, from an iphone heh) and Im racking my brain between the 9700 and 9000. Ive been researching for a few weeks and honestly cannot weigh one over the other.

For starters, I prefer the look of the 9000. I like how its bigger and seems a little more elegant. That being said, I still think the 9700 is a sexy phone, but would much rather have the larger screen. I like the trackpad over the trackball, but think I could live with the trackball. The better speakers on the 9000 seem nice. The 9700 is supposed to be faster, but it seems like the 9000 is still a fast phone. I would like to put a lot of music on the phone so would the 9000 be a better option in that regard? The better battery life of the 9700 is appealing, but how much better is it truly? Lastly, I was looking at the "Post your 9700 theme" thread and really liked a lot of those themes, particularly the OSX theme. Are those only for 9700 or can the 9000 have the same themes? Is it the phone or the OS that determines those sorts of things? Is 5.0 official for the 9000 now and does it work well?

It seems like most people who have the 9000 feel like it isn't worth the upgrade, but what if you didn't already have the 9000? Would you spring for the 9700?

Thanks for any feedback guys. I was gonna post at blackberryforums.com but people seem a little more aggressive over there ha.

I did, and it was well worth it. Coming from a blackberry 8900 which as fast as the bold, or faster, with a high-res screen and better camera I can say the 9700 is far better. For those who don't have a 9700 it is the ideal choice imho. Better battery life, trackpad, sexy form factor, and all the upgrades to the blackberry line that were found with the 8900. Packaged in OS 5.0

    Bliss.

The high-res screen and super battery life is a huge plus for the 9700! I love it!

You mentioned about putting a lot of music on the device. Either device will be fine for that as you should be storing stuff like that on a sd card, just get a card that is going to be big enough.

I was deciding between the 9000 and 9700 and ended up with the 9000, like you mentioned I prefer the slightly larger screen. The down side for me on the original bold is the camera. I really think the best advice would be to try and get down to a store and try some hands on experience with both devices and see which you prefer.

I'd say go with the 9700. I always thought the 9000 was a bit too bulky for my taste. People who have the 9000 love it and some even say it's the best phone they've ever had. I personally don't like it myself because it's too big. It's a great device but I would most definitely go with the 9700. I'm thinking of jumping from my 8320 to the 9700 within a month or so.

I was actually there last night for two hours playing with both until the store closed and I couldnt make a decision so I am going back in after work today. I cant go another day without a phone so today is the day! Im leaning towards the 9700 but RREEAALY prefer the look of the 9000, but the insides of the 9700 are appealing to me.

Any insight on my theme and OS questions?

    confused by your comment?

    8900 faster than the 9000 ?

to the OP - the 9700 is amazing, i came from the 9000, which was an amazing device, but for my personal tastes i prefer the 9700. i also listen to a lot of music through my blackberry, but not through the phone speaker, i listen through headphones or through aux lead into the car. its great for this, i will say the speakers on the 9000 are far superior if you are thinking of listening to a lot of music through the speakers i would definitely take this into consideration.

I will be mostly listening through headphones and aux. Although I could see myself listening through speakers if I were playing something to friends or showing somebody a video. Are the speakers good enough for this?

yeah, the speaker on the 9700 is not terrible, but theres only the one, the 9000 has 3, its is superior to all other BB's i have used in this department.

So youve all gotten over the size downgrade? Im coming from an iphone and having never used one of the smaller BB's the size of the 9000 screen is appealing to me. Maybe I need to get over this.

Yeah. Maybe it was the extra ram in the 8900 over the 9000's faster processor, but the 8900 just felt so much snappier for me when I was playing with them both in the store. I do realize that this doesn't reflect some real world differences, but the 8900 in that instance was faster.

9700 for sure! the 9000 battery life is horrid on 3G. And trackpad is the future of BB's, not to mention the extra app memory the 9700 has.

If you like the size and the look of the 9000 even after all that, get it then.

I have been using various versions of the 9700 for some time now and it is the best Blackberry ever in many ways. Now that I have used the track pad I will never go back to a track ball. RIM absolutely got the track pad piece right. Some may complain about it being wobbly or something, but it sure beats cleaning or replacing track balls which did not necessarily fix the issue (see numerous threads by "Angry Tour Peeps."

Also, the 9000 was a good device with a great screen for videos/pictures, but it is simply too big. The 9700 is significantly faster, and seems to get better coverage than the 9000. The T-Mobile version is their first 3G BB and I have been getting quite a bit of 3G coverage here in SoCal. Actually far better than AT&T.

If you do get the 9000 you should immediately upgrade to 5.0 OS prior to migrating any data, AT&T has been shipping these devices with 4.6.297 which sucks. For the 9700 upgrade to 5.0.0.415

    Hope that helps!

I say 9700, it's the latest and the greatest! Better camera, better battery, more process memory (RAM), and trackpad which many prefer to the trackball.

I was adament about not using/buying the 9700 as my primary BlackBerry device due to the size. Well... I threw that out the windows after using it. The trackpad makes all the difference in the world. No more sore thumbs! I would say get the 9700 as the only thing you may choose the 9000 for is for size. I have big hands and this somehow worked (although the Tour didn't).

Thank you all for the amazing help. I went with the 9700. I started a new post about how I feel about the phone so far as well as some questions that are biting away at me right now. It is titled "Thank you all, I got my first BB, now some nagging questions." Should be somewhere near the top. Check it out if you want to help out with some n00b blackberry questions!

I think you made the right choice to get the 9700. It has 3G, a trackpad and a much better screen resolution which I prefer over the larger one of the 9000. I think you would've down graded in most areas had you gone the 9000 route.
